Power Ranking - Salient ramblings of the champ
Apr, 01 (Week 16) - Salient ramblings of the defending champion. There will likely be no post-season action for me this season. But please enjoy my thoughts on each team as we head towards them. [dazman]

Nels loves to win. And best of all he is good at it. But more importantly i think he hates to lose. The Spurs were not winning nearly enough, not for their GM. Nels has continued to tinker and move pieces around the all-world superstar Giannis. And it appears they have finally found the right formula, riding a 12 game win streak and counting. The Spurs have come good at the right time of the year. And now the post-season beckons. From where they have already gained two rings. He's back!

Stepping up to take the mantle at the defending champs was a huge decision by GM Ethan, and it was always going to come with some serious pressure to perform. I think Ethan has done a wonderful job setting the Bucks up for a sustained period of success, while keeping everything that made the team so strong in tact. The team is deep, long, defensive and still has probably the most dynamic scorer in the league. Remind you of anyone? This feels like Ethan's moment. Enjoy and embrace the magic that is the NSL playoffs. |

Rising high, this might be the highest the Suns have ever been in the power rankings. But, it always feels like something gets in the way when Phoenix starts tasting success. This time its a long term injury to its star Damian Lillard. Yes this team is built to win now, and hosts a nice mix of experience and youth. But i'm not sure that they can without Dame. Especially in this engine where he has flourished, that small scoring guard. It's a shame as Laddas cares about this league almost more than anyone. |

Oh so close were the Lakers last post-season. They had a star studded veteran lineup, and just needed a little luck to obtain that sweet, sweet NSL championship ring. I know getting so close fuels GM Justin, they have used that desire to execute a multitude of winning trades this season, winning for the future absolutely, but also for now. The Lakers eye the main prize this season, and they have the build to do it. Many people think so. Oh how sweet redemption would be with this young squad. |

Often a quiet trader and even quieter fixer behind the scenes (I bet you didn't know that Pete fixed no less than 7 things on the site recently) Pete made a big move, parting ways with his beloved Ben Simmons. Things have snowballed a bit since then, and Miami suddenly look healthier and stronger than they have since my time here. They are still long and disruptive defensively of course, but there is a fire here (Fire, Heat, get it?) not seen since the NLL days for Pistol. Where he was a multiple time champion. |

Nothing surprises me with this scrappy Sixers team. Their GM is probably the hardest working going around, when it comes to earning points or keeping tabs on all 500 of the players in the NBA. He appreciates the value of a 2nd round pick and a solid defensive team. Injuries have smashed them like few others this season, but they are still out there battling away, clawing for each win. If they can get even a couple of guys back, the Sixers can do that much awaited damage in the playoffs.

Oh what a year its been, my first in charge of the Golden State Warriors. My NBA team since the mid 90's. Early days i was really questioning my decision as the losses piled up. But getting Harty healthy and bringing in Jordan Poole has brought fun, enthusiasm and my love of this league right back. Fighting for every win has been so much fun and while i think we will fall short of the play-ins, i'm really excited to see where this team can go in the future. I cannot wait to sit back and watch the sparks fly in the post-season. |

One of the best talent evaluators has been doing his best work this season. Shams has traded and traded and found his way to a terrific squad. He has assembled a scary mix of youth, strength, length and speed that can really matchup with anyone. The depth is their, but their best player Fox currently isnt it. I'm sure it was a really close call to trade him or not. The question is, will he return for the all important playoff run that Shams has been dreaming of all season? I hope so, because Shams is a gem. |

This season has been a roller coaster from Dylan. Some much loved young stars were sent out for two elite veterans in Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. Then Steph was out of favor, then he was back, then he was gone. Left behind was KD who has looked absolutely insane ever since. Brunson is currently on the shelf but i know his presence really delights their GM. You don't want to face Dylan and the Raptors in the playoffs, mark my words. He is the best in the business when he gets to single out one opponent. |

The Jazz have had a rough trot of it since flicking the switch from rebuild to win now. Joel Embiid's battle with his knees is well documented and a constant issue. As has some other key injuries and other deadline and trade dramas. This team could have looked a lot different heading into the playoffs. But they are locked in now and Jase must find a way to really harness what he has in this engine. A common problem and hurdle for long time rebuilding GM's. They also need Joel to be active. |

A picture of health until recently, the Nuggets have enjoyed stability and quietly gone about their business in the Western Conference. Still leaning into the three point build, with some nice veteran 2k players rounding out the squad, the Nuggets are well placed for some post season action. Where they will place remains to be seen in a tight race, where winning as many games as possible these last 4 weeks is vitally important. We wish the Nuggets the best of luck. A really tough squad when both Anthony Davis and Jimmy Butler are available. It has been rarely seen though this season. Finding wins when one of the stars is playing has been the key to keeping the season and playoffs afloat in Minny. If both are available in the playoffs, this team has every chance to make some serious noise, its well built by its predecessor and a defensive nightmare. But is ShayHoops going to have the care, league and game knowledge to take it? We will find out in a few short weeks. |

Young, long, and trouble for their opponent on their day. The Atlanta Hawks rebuild remains in full swing. But don't be fooled, when those 3's are falling this team can bring serious heat with a couple of twin towers down the other end making your life difficult. As those young bigs get stronger and find some offensive craft, i expect this Hawks team to rise quickly up the standings. The future looks bright in Atlanta. And their GM has a lot of patience and doesn't seem the sort to trade for trades sake. |

A really odd season in Dallas, continues to bring about unpredictability. You just never know what you are going to get from the Mavs, much like their GM LJ. Mark Williams is an absolute monster in 2k, and my tip to be the next Andre Drummond. And there are nights when Miles Bridges looks like an unstoppable force. It feels like this team can win, and lose to anyone, on any given night. And while they are on the young side and with a lottery pick and some early 2nds in hand, its a fun ride in Dallas. |

A really good squad that has been poorly treated by the injury gods. When healthy make no mistake this is one of the toughest teams in the NSL, but its unlikely we see it again this season. Still they are highly placed, currently 3rd in the East and have some serious talent. Unfortunately LaMelo looks to be the latest victim of the NBA shutdown curse and will sit after this week. Bank the wins while you can Jonathan. And gear up for the incredibly stressful and exhilarating NSL playoffs. I believe your first?

The Knicks look really good now, and perhaps that was all part of the plan. Gone are the days of honorable losses, i don't think Smokey can hold this team back any longer. The roster looks great, with talent at every position. And they will only look better when Josh Giddey gains PG eligibility. Smokey historically has had great luck in the lottery, so perhaps having the best odd's isn't as important as establishing a winning culture with these young and talented guys towards the end of our season. |

I honestly think the Pistons have really tried to flick the switch and start winning some games this season. But it hasn't really worked out. Injuries have been a factor, but so too has a potential stubbornness on Sheed's part to deal with certain teams. The recent acquisition of Trae Young has so far payed dividends from a health perspective. Lets see if they can make a push for the play-ins, as right now they remain a few games out and without their first round pick. |

A conundrum wrapped in a riddle. Vitticus was recently pegged as a collector of shiny things in a recent article. A better comparison I cannot find (Art of negotiation expert perhaps) The Rockets boasted 3 players over 90 at one stage, but now only have one. Just the best player in the NBA. But this is the NSL, where a high basketball IQ will only get you so far. Depth and the right role players are required around your stars, and im still not sure the fit is right. Although I can see that Vitt is trying to find them. The Rockets are nicely placed despite some recent losses without the Joker. |

I have really enjoyed Craig's work this season in Charlotte, there have been some terrific trades, really fleshing out the depth and fit on this Hornets squad. The build seems ready, and in true Craig style appears to be leaning into the hybrid/ small ball forward mold with plenty of flexibility. However, as is usually the case, this team will only go as far as its star Ja Morant can take them. If he's healthy, I back Craig's ability at the controls to make some real noise in some playoff matchups. |

Leeroy demands a lot from the Pels, and its hard to say they have delivered as yet. With Luka at the helm, and some friendly defensive, athletic and quality bench pieces next to him, the fit seems right. But something is always eluding them from the upper echelon. A playoff berth likely beckons health willing, from there all it takes is some luck and a spark to meet those lofty expectations. Leeroy is one half of the weekly patches duo, often un-credited, he deserves his flowers and some success. |

A lack of depth appears to be a major issue in Washington. I guess thats the price of having a few very highly payed stars. This team just doesn't provoke the fear it should in opponents when a piece is missing, whether it be Lebron, Booker or even Capela. Don't get me wrong, this team has all the pieces to really put it together come playoff time, and i certainly wouldn't want to face them. Maybe that's the idea. It will be a fun watch in 4 short weeks. Lebron to face off against father time once more. |

An odd team to place are the Thunder. Every time i look at the standings, i get a little shocked that they are in 1st place in the West. Always seemingly taking interesting losses to struggling teams (See their record against the Warriors), I guess they are winning the important ones. I really liked the Curry trade and when healthy i think this team really gets it together now at the business end of the season and start taking care of all opponents, no matter their standing. The Thunder are all in, of that there is no doubt. |

Struggling recently yes, but the Pacers are hanging around. Much like Yeet in the discord chat. Once a much feared opponent, the Pacers aren't as scary without Wemby. No one would be, the kids an absolute freak of nature. But they are still there abouts, teetring between playoffs and play-ins. The squad has some pieces to still cause you problems, but are probably still a year away from doing any real damage. It does seem like a matter of when with Wembanyama though, not if. But will that be in Indiana or Portland? |

So young, so talented, but the youth has never really delivered success in Boston. The veteran experience and leadership that this game craves is always going to be lacking with a heavy draft and youth strategy. I firmly believe championships are won in free agency in the way you fill your bench. If Toby ever wants sustained success, they cant keep turning over players into younger players and picks year after year. But Toby is patient, and perhaps one day, it all works out. But my advice, save a roster spot or two for some free agent vets. |

The Grizzlies are coming! All year Rootsey has heard about bananas and how his squad has underachieved. But something seems to have finally clicked in Memphis, and now the squad is even healthy. After injuries to most of the starters delayed the inevitable, I expect this to be the week the Grizzlies enter the play-in's in the West. And with some other teams looking a little shaky above them, they can certainly cause some damage if they avoid the raft of NBA shutdowns. Many have poked the bear this season, they may yet regret it. |

Don't look now but the Kings have seemingly lost their mojo. 3-9 in their last 12 and a 6 game losing streak is not what Klemm would have wanted so close to the finish line of another play-in appearance. With Mitch Robinson finally healthy and surrounded by outside shooters, it wasnt supposed to go like this. Klemm's men have to regain the magic soon, with the Grizzlies (and Warriors if they can go on another run) nipping at their heels. Perhaps the key was Charles Bassey afterall. Mailo is a terrific addition to this league, always attends the big NSL events, even at ridiculous hours and i think most people want to see the Magic doing well again. Unfortunately this season has been another struggle. A very top heavy roster that featured too many good bigs finally found some balance and success with the addition of Kyrie Irving, only for injuries to crush their season. Without a lottery pick this season, Mailo will need to get to work in the offseason to improve this squad. Thankfully most of the rotation should return.

I was as shocked as anyone when Jmac chose draft picks over competing for a third title. But perhaps he saw the writing on the wall with his squad. Always a master at the trade table and with an astute eye for value, its hard to argue with the results. 7 first round selections this year, most of them lottery, and a ridiculous 22 more for the future. Jmac saw an opportunity and value, and has made the most of it. When he decides he wants that third title, he can basically handpick his squad for it. An absolute masterclass of GM work. |

The Clippers entered the offseason with a swag of salary cap space and were the hot favorites to finally add a bruising center, what seemed to be the last piece required next to a bunch of young stars at every other position. Unfortunately they gambled and lost out on Demar Derozan, while a division rival was left to swoop on Isaiah Hartenstein. This has again left the Clippers looking short and lacking on the rebounds in almost every contest again this season. As expected this means a serious lack of wins and another high draft pick incoming. Perhaps this is where GM Andrew finally lands his big man and sets his course on the playoffs. |

There was so much optimism around the Nets heading into the season. They had a new big 3 and what looked to be an even stronger and more balanced squad than last seasons 9th placed team. Unfortunately with 4 weeks left, they find themselves at the bottom of the standings. Thankfully they hold their first round pick, but its hard to see where its all gone wrong this season in Brooklyn. Sure they have had their share of injuries, but so have most teams. A big offseason awaits for GM Breece to try and find some answers. |
