Adams down, Sims in?
Philly Frills: 23/10/2023
Ahead of the
season today, the Philadelphia 76ers received some devastating news when it was
found that their starting big man, Steven Adams, was set to undergo season
ending surgery on his knee that had been declared fit and healthy only week
earlier. Adams had already been showing he was going to be a major piece in the
starting spot in Philly, anchoring the defence and dominating the boards in the
pre-season, but now they are going to have to go in a new direction.
What does
this news mean for the team? How much does it affect their chances of making
the playoffs, which seemed like such a sure thing only days ago with their
strong pre-season performances. To be honest, the GM and team are sitting here
in a quiet dumbfounded state trying to decide.
They are
left with Omer Yurtseven, who stood in the starting place so well 2 seasons ago
as a rookie while they struggled for a starting C. DayRon Sharpe, who too has
shown some prowess on the boards in good court time. And now the newly acquired
Jericho Sims who also is a monster on the boards when given time. But, none of
these guys is a truly rock solid and 100% locked in piece for the coming season
in the NBAand that could be a problem.
Speaking of
Sims, he was acquired only hours before the Adams news broke to solidify the
bench big man rotation behind what was looking like a locked in Adams/Achiuwa
front court, and now, he might be in line for an even bigger role.
Another
option could be a free agent splash. Throw those 99 points down on a big man, all
of which are likely to be highly coveted, and hope for the best. Who would be
better than JaVale McGee stepping into a starting role after winning a title
last year? Or DeAndre Jordan off an 82 game season for OKC.
Time will
tellas the 76ers see how things start working for them sans Adams and where
they want to go.
