NSL Insider - Defence wins chipsby EthanC21, updated on Saturday, May 16 2020, 01:38 am EST Here we are about to head into the Conference Finals of the inaugural NSL season. Congrats to all those guys who have made it this far! It’s time to vote for our defensive player of the year, there are a TONNE of worthy candidates but just going to highlight a few I think are worthy. Candidates are listed in order of teams with the best DEff and the player from that team that a made significant impact on the defensive end. 1. Kawhi Leonard: The team that finished with the best record in the league, the best defence in the league and arguably the favourites to win the title. The number speak for themselves Portland had a DEff of 97.82, which was the best in the league and they also held the 3rd highest rebound percentage in the league. On top of all this the blazers had an insane net efficiency of 13.82 The Klaw is the lynch pin for this teams top tier defence, often matched up against the opposing teams best player and averaging 2.4 steals per game while doing so. 2. Anthony Davis The Bulls hold the second best DEff in the league, narrowly behind the blazers with 98.32, also boasting an impressive net efficiency of 12.20. The Bulls have been the best in the east all year and AD is the motor behind their top tier defence, he’s averaging 2.7 steals per game, 2.1 blocks per game and ranks #6 in defensive rebounds per game. Chicago also held the second highest rebound percentage in the league. 3. Deandre Jordan DJ was the anchor for the Miami heat on defence this season, the heat held the 3rd best DEff in the league, while they had a lot of contributors to that, none did more than DJ. DJ averaged 1.5 steals per game and 1.2 blocks per game in the regular season, as well as coming in at #9 in the league for defensive rebounds. 4. Jimmy Butler Jimmy G Buckets, undoubtably one of the best two way guys In the league. Jimmy is an absolute dog on the defensive end and he helped keep the suns as a top tier defence even after trading away Kawhi Leonard. Jimmy averaged an insane 2.6 steals per game while constantly taking on the opposing teams best player. The suns also held the 4th best DEff in the league. 5. Hassan Whiteside The Sixers had one of the leagues best defences in the inaugural season, this was in large part to Whiteside controlling the paint and sending back shots all season long, averaging 1.6 blocks per game, while adding 1.4 steals per game. Whiteside also came in at #14 in defensive rebounds per game. The Sixers held a DEff of 99.82 and ranked just outside the top 10 in rebound percentage. 6. Steven Adams Steven Adams bounced around a bit in his first year in the NSL, but looks like he might have a home in SA. Aqua man has all the numbers needed to be considered for DPOY, Spurs were 6th In the league in DEff, while Adams average 10 defensive rebounds a game, 1.8 blocks per game and 1.7 steals per game. The Spurs also came in at 9th in rebound percentage across the league. 7. Lebron James The Kings find themselves with the 7th best D in the league this season, with Lebron unlike his NBA counterpart, being a heavy contributor on that end of the floor. Lebron finished with the fourth most steals in the league at 2.2 per game. The Kings also came in 3rd place for the most steals per game at 10.8, as well as finishing in 10th spot in rebound percentage. Honourable mentions: All are worth candidates but I decided to stick with top 7 teams in DEff as a trend for this. Rudy Gobert – averaging 1.6bpg and 1.6spg Joel Embiid – averaging 1.8bpg and 1.7spg Paul George – averaging 2spg |
