Week 16 has been a big one for the Spurs. The injury report is still not ideal with almost half the roster featuring. Though key players Jimmy Butler, Larry Nance, Cody Zeller (unlikely to return) and Frankie Smokes featured, the lineup was pretty decent this week as the Spurs had more than one healthy big man. Still, the heavy lifting needed to be done by our star, the King, the Goat(?), Lebron James.
In a brutal schedule, the Spurs started the week with emerging playoffs/play-in contender Sacramento Kings. Though it started close, the Spurs kicked it into overdrive and Lebron could be seen ploughing through ex-teammate Seth Curry on consecutive plays for highlight dunks. Lebron but up big numbers, making Carmelo Anthonys debut a successful one.
The Spurs then faced the night of the post deadline Memphis Grizzlies who looked near full strength. GM Nels had pencilled this one in as an L when looking at the schedule before consulting the King. Lebron responded, We aint losing this one, coach. Spurs ran out 20 point winners behind Lebrons 54 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists.
Then it was off to Portland for a classic rivalry game. Portland came in healthy with all stars Harden and KD cleared to debut. GM Nels had written this one in pen as an L when checking the schedule purely because the Spurs need every weapon on their arsenal to take down their rival. Jimmy being sidelined meant match-up issues though Melos arrival would offer respite. In an NSL Classic, stars KD and LeGoat went toe-to-toe in a shootout. KD ended up with 42 points, torching the spurs from mid range and outside while Lebron finished with 46 bullying the Blazers bigs in the paint. Regardless of result, GM Nels was excited with the competitive showing from his squad and in a game that either team couldve won, the Spurs held on to win by 2 after a disjointed final possession from Portland resulting in a Westbrook contested 3 clunking off the rim. Final scores Spurs 109 defeated Portland 107.
The final match-up of the week was GOTW against the always lively Pelicans. Pels also looked near full strength with all key stars playing, meaning the Spurs would have to pull all the stops to get a W. In another classic showing, Lebron went for another near triple double with 38 points, 17 rebounds and 9 assist as the Spurs came home with a wet sail to win 92-77. The Spurs finished with a 26-12 final term which proved the difference.
With Week 16 in the books, the Spurs will likely rest LeGoat next week as they prepare for the run home. Butler looks set to return while underrated starter Noel will likely be sidelined for a while. With Nance ramping up activities, it appears the Spurs could get a look at a healthy team come week 19-20.
