Pre-Deadline Double Down
The Spurs have completed a flurry of pre-trade deadline moves to reshape the roster with a focus on Size and athleticism.
After a short stay in San Antonio (again), Seth Curry was dealt to the Sacramento Kings who look to be building towards a late season run at the play-ins/ 8th seed. Curry's short stay in San Antonio was productive over 21 games with the sharp shooter averaging 15 points, 2.3 threes and 3.6 assists per contest.
Joining San Antonio are the walking wounded, Larry Nance and Cody Zeller but the jewel in the deal is the return of the Spurs' 2024 first round pick. Though it seems a small piece, the pick is insurance in case a rapid deterioration of health hits the contender as it appears to have since confirming the Seth Curry trade. Currently, the Spurs roll into Week 15 with 6 healthy players and 6 Center eligible players sidelined. But the vision for the franchise isn't towards the coming week but the closing weeks of the season as they look to defend their title against the might of the Western Conference.
When asked about the deal GM Nelson showed great optimism. 'We love the acquisition of our pick but we're sneakily excited about Larry Nance returning in the back end of the season. Nance will give us size and athleticism, he can play backup mins at both forward positions and plays basketball the way the Spurs like to play. He's big and can defend the perimeter and we are currently exploring ways to play a Lebron, Nance and Jimmy bully-ball style. We've never aimed to be the most glamorous team on the court, we just want to be tough and cause headaches for our opposition's offense with size, strength and athleticism. Losing Seth will hurt our ability to score quickly but we believe in guys like Terance Mann and their ability to fill his role with slightly more size and defensive prowess.'

The Spurs are hopeful on the return and signing of Cody Zeller though his return is more in the doubtful category while Nance is hopefully just a matter of time.
The final acquisition through the pre-deadline flurry was long 6"6 defensive point guard, Frank Ntilikina. Fankie Smokes has spent his first few years in the league as a raw prospect journeyman. In 2k, he fits the Spurs' system perfectly. He's big, has terrific lateral quickness and possesses the badges that make him annoying for opposing teams who play a pg dominant brand of basketball. Ntilikina will debut in week 15 for the Spurs and will likely see a large role off the bench in his debut week.
The Spurs are optimistic that something resembling an 8-man rotation can assemble prior to the business end of the season and the reigning champions will need to utilise each game down the stretch as an opportunity to build championship chemistry. The pecking order is clearly set with Lebron, Jimmy and Jrue at the controls, however there is still time for role players to shine as the business playoffs approach. Last year was a special year for the Spurs where a late trade opened the door to a championship run, GM Nelson is hopeful his latest moves will give his franchise the tools and energy to repeat history.
