Operation 'Consolidation' in motion
Rumblings of some different names have surfaced in Oakland over
the past few days other than the usual trade candidates of superstars like Zach
Lavine and DeAndre Ayton.
From afar, it looks like GM Clay wants to make a strong
effort to surround his stars with when now players at this stage.
Clay seems to be experiencing a changing of the guard regarding
philosophy, at least this year. “We’ve been sitting on this team nearly half
the year, and when they’re clicking they’re elite. It’d be naïve of us to think
we will stumble into a mix of veterans and young players like this in years to
come. We need to capitalize even if that means risking a bit of the future.”
The rumored assets that are newly available in the Bay have
a bit of a youthful feel, which is against the grain of the Titles typical
mindset. Headlined by rookie wing Ziaire Williams and Nassir Little, the
Warriors are attempting to add pressure to the top teams in the Western Conference.
Nassir Little is having his best NBA season yet, and seems
to be blossoming into an elite wing defender propelled by his athletic ability
and frame. He’s currently simply just not getting minutes in Oakland due to the
log jam in the starting lineup.
There is also some smoke that if Tim Hardaway ends up being
the odd man out, that management feels pretty comfortable that Nassir Little
could slide into his role and not be a devastating loss. THJ’s salary will also
play a vital part in match making during the trade process in Oakland. He’s not
a bad piece to have to “make the deal work”. Time will tell what the future of the SF
position looks like in Oakland.
Ziaire Williams in sparing run in the NBA has looked
impressive. His consistency of course needs to impress, but he has proven he
belongs athletically and doesn’t look overwhelmed which are promising signs.
Memphis damn sure knows how to develop talent, so Z’s ceiling is sky high. His
2K ratings haven’t caught up to him yet, mainly due to playing time I believe,
but we all know how 2K handles rookies and their ratings.
The other gem that has hit the trade block with some ferocity
is newly acquired FA guard Spencer Dinwiddie. While the other assets on the
block have a future feel, Spencer is a good player right now that is proven. He’s
easily the “best asset” in the group.
The presumptive hope for Clay is to package him with a
player like THJ to a depth needy team for a legitimate upgrade. There would be
a huge spot at the PG position if Spencer is moved, so it may be tricky, but the
Warriors have pulled off some dramatic deals before that have worked out. Dinwiddie
is going to be an interesting case to keep an eye on.
