Pick 36: Marcus Sasser

Philly Frills: 31/07/2023
The other day we started looking at the draft just past. Continuing to
look at the 76er draft in the wake now of Summer league, we move to their next
selection.
Their third pick in this draft ended up being in the mid 2nd
round, after they shifted out of Pick 37 and 58 for Pick 42, 43 and 56 which
then subsequently saw them shift out of Pick 42 for two future 2nd
round picks. The next pick they drafted with was Pick 43, and here they were in
heavy discussions about trading it out for 2 future 2nd round picks
right down until the clock ran outas the other party would only stick with one
future 2nd. So, they went for the best available.
With the 43rd pick in the NSL draft, the Philadelphia 76ers
select
Age: 22
Position: PG
Height: 63
NBA Draft Spot: 25th
NBA Team: Detroit Pistons
To be honest, Marcus Sasser was never on the mind of the 76ers GM
leading into this draft and right up until he found himself writing the name
Marcus Sasser into the chat box to draft him, that rang true still. Point guard
was not a position of need for the 76ers and often PGs around the turn of the 1st
round and early 2nd round seem to go by the wayside, unless youre Jalen
Brunson. So they never considered drafting him at Pick 31 or 36but still ended
up with the 25th overall pick in the NBA draft at pick 43, and here
it could be a steal.
The 76ers were trying to trade this pick out for 2x future 2nds right
down until their drafting clock ran out of time, and since no deal was struck,
they instead drafted the NBA 1st rounder like they did the year
before at Pick 42, in Peyton Watson. One radio announcer as the pick was made
stated He might just be Detroits best defender and best shooter in a couple
of years, and with that, Nenjabin was first introduced to their new draftee.
Sasser is a 63 PG who had a storied college career as a lead guard and
lights out shooter. He didnt do much at the rim, but give him a jumpshot and
he made everyone pay. He also was the point of contact lead defender being that
point guard and with a nose for defence with energy abounds. He might yet
simply slip right into the mould of a player that the 76ers love, playing both
ends of the ball, and maybe he becomes that next falling player steal for
them.
In the Summer league, he had a bit of an up and down play, but
culminated in a 40 point outburst where his confidence started to land and
everything slowed for him in that moment. He made shot after shot, outside and
at the rim, and suddenly, he was showing he could belong.
The jury is still out if Marcus will be on the squad come the season
start with too many bodies in the 76er roster already, but he should have a
long career ahead of him whether it be in Philly or elsewhere.
