Summer League Recap: Returnees

Philly Frills: 24/07/2023
The NBA Summer League is now complete and while there are teams out
there who can only watch on from the sidelines and take notes for whom they
might want to take an FA swing on in October, the 76ers are one of those teams
that can field a summer league roster entirely from within, and so watch the
progress of their guys closely. Heres how the 76ers faired, starting with the
guys on the roster from last year:
Kenny Lofton Jr.
Lofton was a fan favourite at last years summer league as a rookie, and was
again a draw card at this years summer league. He didnt see much time as a
rookie, and none in the NSL, but he won the GLeague rookie of the year
averaging 20/10/4/1 in 28 minutes. He again showed he is ready to contribute on
an NBA roster in this summer league, as long as he can defend a spot, averaging
18 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block while shooting 51% from
the field and 46% from downtown. Hes already on a full deal, and looks like
hell take the court this year.
Jabari Walker
Last year, Jabari was the last pick in the draft at 57th, but
he put up 12 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block in 22 minutes of
action in summer league on 63/43/80 splits and was handed a 3 year deal. This
year, with Trendon Watford now gone, he showed he still can play a role around
more focal options putting up 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in
23 minutes on 57/50/70 splits. His body looked better suited to both forward
spots and he continued to pick his spots and not force the issue. His contract
is guaranteed already for this year and he should immediately step into a
larger role with Watford gone, and maybe more if Portland hit reset after Dame.
Luka Samanic
Luka has been on the roster a while now, but was playing for his life in
summer league this year after finally landing a 2 year non guaranteed deal with
the Jazz, after failing as pick 19 in his draft year. Hes still only 23 years
old and has genuine size with an inside outside game that can play down to the
SF spot. In playing for his career, Luka didnt disappoint, showing a
willingness to play team ball, hustle, move the ball, make the right play, not
force things and play hard on both ends. He averaged a respectable 15 points, 7
rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block in 23 minutes and shooting splits of
48/37/100, showing he can contribute to winning and play within the team. His
court time will likely be tied to SF behind Markkanen if he makes the opening
roster, but hes slowing becoming guaranteed money.
Raiguan Gray![]()
Gray was Brooklyns 59th pick in 2021 and has buzzed around
the team a bit since then showing his versatility in handling the ball as a big
man but definitely still found himself on the outside looking in again this
year. He was first off the bench for 19 minutes a game and averaged 7.5 points,
5 rebounds, 3 assists and nearly a steal and block per game, but struggled
shooting with 37/23/100 splits and ultimately didnt impress too much. He was
cut from the team days after summer league, and his future I the NBA and NSL
stands in the balance now.
Quenton Jackson
Another of the 2 year, 2way guys remaining on the 76ers roster (with
Gray), Jackson is a little older at 24 already in his 2nd year after
going undrafted. He was a feature in the 76er rotation as an uber athletic 2
way guard last year though and might be again this year if he lasts. He
averaged 7 points on 36/25/88 splits in summer league, which wasnt great, but
showed his hustle and defensive ability, while also playing within the team
averaging 4 rebounds and 4 assists a game, with 1.5 steals also. He will likely
remain on a 2way deal for now as Washington navigate the post Beal world.

The 20 year old Watson is in line for a much bigger role this year in
the NBA Champ Denver team with Bruce Brown having departed. Its widely
reported that his 2way skillset will be the perfect replacement, and so his
summer league showings were going to be important. He came out and in only 2
games before being shut down and declared too good for summer league, averaged
19 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks on 52/20/81 shooting
which showed huge improvement from year 1 in the league. He looks poised for a
role and to become a feature in the 76er team also, maybe alleviating the
potential loss of Donte DiVincenzo.
The future is looking strong if these Summer league heroes are anything
to go by, but they all still need to show they can make it happen in the NBA
now before they make any giant leaps here. Watson would seem to be the
brightest star, but time will tell.
Well look at the rookies next.
