Shake Up in Philly

Philly Frills: 17/07/2023
The first big move of the Philadelphia offseason has come days after the
end of the 22/23 seasons financial year passing and opening of the free agency
period and trades. It was a move that had been touted for a while now with the
notice of the leagues evolving CBA rules as well as positional rules, making
the front court of Steven Adams and Rudy Gobert, on the court at the same time,
an impossible feat. It meant a chip had to fall and the obvious choice was the
elite big man making $41 million this year, with 2 more even pricier years to
follow.
As a result, Rudy Gobert spent only another few short months in
Philadelphia before once again heading out of town like he did a few years
back. The deal was as follows:
Out:
Rudy Gobert
Washington 2024 2nd
In:
Precious Achiuwa
Talen Horton-Tucker
Marcus Morris
Davis Bertans
Pick 31
New Orleans 2024 1st
The immediate impact is obvious. Precious is able to play alongside
Adams if required, while also filling in for him if required, and the splitting
up of such a large contract into smaller moveable pieces allows for further
movement. And, theres some other assets in picks attached also. But how did
this stack up to what they sent out for him just a few months ago?
Precious Achiuwa for Al Horford
Talen Horton-Tucker for Alex Caruso
Pick 31 for Pick 21
New Orleans 2024 1st for Philadelphia 2027 1st
+ Marcus Morris and Davis Bertans
Everyone would have different opinions on which side you want to be on,
but for the future, it would seem Precious/THT is preferable to Horford/Caruso
despite the impact the two veterans still have right now. There was a slight
dip from 21 to 31 in the draft, and they moved forward 3 years in the 1st
round.
The splitting of contracts also then allowed for the packaging of Marcus
Morris with Brandon Boston Jr, to bring in Norman Powell as a possible Donte
DiVincenzo replacement. And clearing of Bertans contract for some future late
2nds creates some breathing room below the luxury tax line.
The talent and impact of Rudy will no doubt be missed, but the
flexibility and positional gains from the trade as a whole seems to have set
the 76ers up in some good stead heading into the free agency period.
All the best in LA, Rudy, and welcome to the team, the new 76ers!
