Testing the Waters

Philly Frills: 17/03/2023

The 76ers today made a move to take a flier on the future. They sent off the recently acquired Haywood Highsmith for cash considerations, to allow for the signing of their 2 way player whom they picked up last year, Lindy Waters III.

Lindy is by no means a sure thing. He was a 25 year old rookie last year and hasnt played a game for the 76ers since his signing, though they do hold him in some regard having chosen to hold him over other freshly drafted 2way guys like Isaiah Mobley, and clearly choosing to have him on the roster ahead of Highsmith in the immediate.

The thing about Lindy that took the 76ers attention last year ahead of other possible 2way signings, was his desire and ability to play a role where he doesnt need the ball to impact the game. Hes an energetic and solid defender, he has good size on the wing, and he has a deadly 3pt shot. Thats an NBA skill right there. All this is the perfect makings of an NBA career as a role player and pinch hitter. Guys have got big deals around the league for being able to do only one of those things *cough* Duncan Robinson *cough*, and Lindy knows his place.

In the NBA, his opportunities have been sporadic this season after finishing strong end of last year as the Thunder tanked their way through 6 man healthy line ups. Lindy just did what he knows he must to be in the league, shoot the 3 ball. The stats on his FG attempts are clear. Last year he shot 146/175 shots from beyond the arc. This season? 84/91. Yeah you read that right. Hes sitting at 92% of his FGA from deep this year, and 87% on his career. And hes making them at 37% while pitching in nearly 6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per 36. Basically, hes the type of role player that can come in and hit a couple important deep shots, space the floor, not hurt your defence and check back out.

In the long run, he may not stick anywhere, but hes giving himself the chance with his NBA skill down pat and maybe he just latches on somewhere. Well continue testing the Waters til then.

Congratulations on a full deal, Lindy.
