The Return

Philly Frills: 28/02/2023
The season
was waning in Philly. The losses were starting to mount. Theyve had a starter
out for pretty much every week since Week 5 and they had slipped below the
Play-In line, let alone the Playoff line. How were they going to resurrect what
was looking like someone elses dream as their pick got better and better?
That was 2
weeks ago. A lot can change in 2 weeks. They made a coaching change 2 weeks ago
and managed to find something that would start them back on the winning path. I
think they ended up with 5 in a row before getting smashed off the court by San
Antonio again. Steven Adams made an unlikely cameo return this past week
helping them to 3 more wins, and then the move for hope happened to finish the
last week. Rudy Gobert has returned to Philadelphia.
Rudy was the
1st player drafted to the 76ers, 25th (?) overall in the
league during the inaugural league draft those years ago but was traded out halfway
through that first year when it became apparent that the mix of players drafted
wasnt working. He headed to Detroit where he helped them through some golden
years including a Finals appearance but now has found his way back into Philly,
perhaps as a better and/or more influential player than when he departed.
The trade
saw Al Horford and Alex Caruso, acquired with Andrew Wiggins in the offseason,
depart the team with some draft capitol. The Wolves were enticed by Horfords
salary reduction in a years time and asset accumulation while the 76ers who have
been struggling for size all year, particularly with Steven Adams injured, obviously
went all out.
Gobert isnt
a world beater, but he will alter the game in big ways the same way he has for
a few years now, and if on the court at the same time as Adams, will be one of
the biggest rebounding and defensive forces in the league.
Is it enough
to help continue this small comeback by the 76ers, as they push for a home
advantage play in spot? Or, will the now tied up cap next year (nearly $23mil
more than before the trade) become a burden on top of the losing?
Welcome back,
Rudy Gobert!
