NSL Insider - Premium: NSL Glue Guys

by jmac, updated on Thursday, February 02 2023, 11:09 pm EST

It takes all sorts to form a functioning, successful team. A successful team is made up of players who fill different niches, functioning in an effective AND complementary manner. Who is critical to their teams success, beyond the statistics and the eye test?

Atlanta Hawks Pascal Siakam

Sure, hes a star in the NBA. In the NSL, however, he is one of the best, most versatile supporting players, capable of playing four positions.

Boston Celtics Lu Dort

Sweet Lu shoots more than he should, but he is the most physical, defensively-able guard in Boston and hes happy to play without the ball.

Brooklyn Nets Lauri Markannen

Much like Siakam, Lauri is yet to realise his full potential in the NSL. Until then, he is a fast 7-footer who can score at all levels and play three positions.

Charlotte Hornets P.J. Tucker

Theres not much data here, but Tucker appears to be the exact type that Charlotte needed to bolster the roster. He does his best work without the ball.

Chicago Bulls Nic Claxton

Much like his ascension in the NBA, Nic looks like a legitimate modern-day big man. Low usage, but a great finisher around the rim and dominant without the ball, long arms and spring able to steal and block with ease.

Cleveland Cavaliers Brandon Clarke

Much like Claxton is for the Bulls, Clarke is the for the Cavaliers; he can score without much usage, runs and jumps well and is a strong post presence. The Cavs lose steam when he misses time.

Dallas Mavericks Bobby Portis Jr.

Can a glue guy be the teams best player? This might be the case with Crazy Eyes, as on most nights, he appears to be the only Maverick who can impact the game positively.

Denver Nuggets Willy Hernangomez

Does anyone like a big Willy more than Digga and Denver? Unlikely. But Hernangomez is a huge unit in 2k and is dominant on the rebounds and finishing inside.

Detroit Pistons Alec Burks

The Pistons are a mess. Theres an argument to be made for Burks being their best player, which is also terrible for the Pistons if true. Burks is scoring and playmaking effectively as their SF.

Golden State Warriors Jerami Grant

He arguably is the only Warrior-wing who is capable of playing starters minutes. His offense isnt as good in the NSL, but hes still a pesky defender and a great athlete.

Houston Rockets Paul Reed

Vitticus said it himself, the team was better with Reed at the 4. Fast and strong, and a good defender, Reed is the defensive and rebounding enforcer that allows Jokic to thrive.

Indiana Pacers - Dalen Terry

Sure, hes been demoted, and the blatant tanking has stopped since new management were hired, but Terry, a rookie, has been brilliant for Indiana as a big facilitator and defender.

LA Clippers Trey Murphy

Andrew knows young talent and Murphy is no exception. He has size and feel and a great three-point shot, which should equate to a great career.

LA Lakers TBD

Who is even left on this team? Lakers brass sold anyone who had the ability to impact 2k at a high level. Who will prove themselves?

Memphis Grizzlies Jaren Jackson Jr.

Probably the best player on this list. A menace on defense and one of the best rim protectors in the league. His ability to dominate without the ball is key to the Grizzlies going all the way and providing enough usage around to others.

Miami Heat Thomas Bryant

Bryant is playing inspired basketball in the NBA. He is showing off a offensive versatility and fire I didnt know he had. Hes playing different roles for Miami and looks like a great addition.

Milwaukee Bucks Matisse Thybulle

An elite 2k-stopper, defensive savant Thybulle is incredibly limited as a basketball player. However, he is amazing defensively and thats all the Bucks wanted next to SGA and Demar!

Minnesota Timberwolves Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

KCP is a bit of a 2k darling in terms of his shooting but when you consider he has one of the highest shooting percentages from three in the entire NBA, you can see why hes so effective for the winning Wolves.

New Orleans Pelicans TBD

Another team that is very much in flux; I can see Wendell Carter Jr. being the type of player that fits this role.

New York Knicks Josh Hart

The quintessential glue-guy, Josh Hart is renowned for doing the little things that lead to winning basketball. Works hard, is versatile and willing.

OKC Thunder Deandre Jordan

Deandre hasnt had it in the NBA for a while now but in 2k hes still a tall, bruising rim protector. The fit as the veteran on the young OKC team was perfect.

Orlando Magic Aaron Gordon

Another player whom the Portland Trailblazers didnt value and moved on pre-season who has proved them wrong. Gordon has improved as a shooter, scorer and is a big physical defender.

Philadelphia 76ers Draymond Green*

I wish he was as impactful in 2k for Ben as he is in the NBA. Im still unsure what he provides in 2k, but this is a nod to his all-time status as a glue guy for the Warriors.

Phoenix Suns Jaden McDaniels

He plays any wing position as a versatile and impactful defender. McDaniels if one of Laddas key guys and its easy to see why, as hes built for modern basketball.

Portland Trailblazers Joe Ingles

Its only been a few games, but the statistics and the eye test support this selection; Joe is like water, filling the gaps within the roster with fluidity, three-point shooting and intelligence.

Sacramento Kings Bogdan Bogdanovic

Is he the only King thats played every game for them, likely. He is a shooter first but is also defending and playmaking at a good level for the Kings.

San Antonio Spurs Javale McGee

One of 2ks Hall of Fame glitch stars, McGee continues to have an impact as big as he is tall. A rebound and block machine that dwarfs all other players. Spurs need him healthy.

Toronto Raptors Darius Bazley

Dylan identified early on in the season that Bazley, with his size, athleticism and exuberance, had all the tools to be a big, bruising and effective 2k player.

Utah Jazz Franz Wagner

Yet to catch up to his NBA-self, Franz is still effective for Jazz as a Jack-of-all-trades, possessing the size and broad skillset to be successful in many roles.

Washington Wizards TBD

The new-look, much improved Wizards are a piece of art yet to be seen by the eyes of the public. Exciting times!
