NSL Insider - Team by Team: Miami Heat

by merencio, updated on Wednesday, December 23 2020, 03:26 am EST

2019-20 Finish: 51-31

 Season Highlight:

Certainly the fact that this team ended the season as the #3 seed in the Eastern Conference. Ben Simmons is a true 2k superstar, and coupled with Pete (Pistolpk), definitely one of the top GMs in the league, this team was able to overcome so much, find underrated 2k value and were such a tough out all season.

Season Lowlight:

No doubt it has to be the injury, and later another injury, to Jonathan Isaac. One of Petes favorite players, most definitely a guy that he sees as a part of the future and was on the verge of a breakout or maybe had one. This is truly sad for such a talented guy. Heres to hoping he bounces back and is integrated to the Heat as soon as possible.

Best Trade:

The Indiana Pacers send C.J. McCollum to the Miami Heat. The Miami Heat send Aaron Gordon and Justin Jackson to the Indiana Pacers.

The Indiana Pacers send a 1st-Rounder (Tor) to the Miami Heat. The Miami Heat send a 1st-Rounder (Phi) and 1st-Rounder (Was) to the Indiana Pacers.

Anytime you can get a guy like CJ2K in building, usually the win will go your way, and I like this for the Heat because not only you got the clear best player in the deal but also you got yourself a 1st rounder back. That said Aaron Gordon is athletic, probably top 1% in the NBA, therefore hell always overachieve in the NSL, but the book is written on him. Also that Washington 21 pick he also sent in the trade is looking like a bad pick to have for the year.

Worst Trade:

This GM trades very little, hes a top GM too, and everything is very calculated. So theres very little to knock on but well go with this one.

The Miami Heat send Marvin Williams and PJ Washington to the Orlando Magic. The Orlando Magic send Aaron Gordon and Matt Thomas to the Miami Heat.

Now, remember this is a little bit of a stretch, but Marvin was somewhat of a 2k glitch and PJ Washington will be solid for 10 years in the NBA. A bit of context, Gordon was actually 2k good and Pete was trying to compete and maintain relevant after the Isaac injury, and he later turned Gordon into CJ2K as weve alluded so all-in-all a push.

Other Notable Trades:

Heat sends: MIA 1st 20 (RJ Hampton)
Heat gets: Minny 1st 23

This couldve been the best trade possibly, and this left people wondering if there was more to this. Probably Minny wanted into the draft, and the Heat were willing to wait. Minny then went into a full rebuild, and the pick is no longer there, though I like RJ. For the record, that Minny pick eventually returned to Minny, so all is well.

Heat sends: Norman Powell
Heat gets: Tony Snell, 1st WAS 21

Powell had a good year and is a good 2k player for all intents and purposes, and Snell is just meh. The first is the quicker and helped in the CJ deal, so this is a push.

Heat sends: Batum, Snell, 1st MIA 21
Heat gets: Millsap, Carroll

Now I like this one, because this is good 2k value back and then on top of that you get rid of Batums radioactive contract. Had to give up a 1st to do it, but the whole value for 2k and future cap relief is probably worth it. Paul is probably staying too, so its good.

Heat sends: 1st TOR 20 (Bolmaro)
Heat gets: 1st DET 21

Again, Pete decides to wait and trades out of the draft for a future pick. It all comes down to Detroits season and if theyre worse than #24 to evaluate this. In the long haul, its probably a push.

Free Agency:

Matt Thomas  site says UFA but this is merely a formality, hell get picked up for sure. Pete loves this guy, dead-eye shooter and probably the second coming of Dylan Windler.

Paul Millsap  UFA, the prize of the Heats FA and they created a good environment that he manifested interest to stay so theyre prepared for the defense of their guy.

Wilson Chandler  UFA, a truly Heat like guy, all those do-it-all forwards, but he looks out the door here.

DeMarre Carroll UFA, hes still undecided and both sides havent talked yet, theres still a small chance he returns.

Elfrid Payton  UFA, this guy is interested in coming back, but will Miami actually make the effort to bring him back? Will it be even necessary? Hes a per minute assist monster, bet you didnt know that.

Thon Maker UFA, what age is this guy really? Maybe hes due for a breakout, maybe hes about to retire. Hell be playing somewhere else.

Wes Iwundu UFA, Ill say this, hes a 6-8 guy listed as a PG, so maybe he has potential? Hes listed as FA so I believe it.

Star:

Ben Simmons

Who else? 23 ppg, 6 rpg, 7 apg on 62% shooting, I mean, this dude is point guard, man! I believe the correct term is point-forward now, but really this guy is a true unicorn, he was born to pass the ball, so gifted and one of my favorite guys to watch. Oh btw, id you know that hes shooting 3s in practice? Bet you didnt! The explosion is coming.

Goat:

I guess the goat has to be Mohamed Bamba, although the jury is still out to some, I dont see it. The guy shows flashes but theyre really rare. Although 2k sees him as a monster, this guy doesnt seem to want it enough to break through. Remember, he plays for NBA Orlando, its not that hard, man!

Draft Grades:

Jordan Nwora with the 53rd pick in the draft. He looks like the next NEXT Dylan Windler. A guy that has a deep rane, with catch and shoot potential and good feel for the game. A Heat type of a player. Hes from Louisville and not from a smaller school but I guess Heat fans can get into the hype regardless. At that spot, due to size, fit and skillset, I give this a C+.

The Future:

To be honest, to me the future is less bright now than it was a year ago. Bamba was still a possible breakout candidate and Isaac was balling and 2 injuries away so I cant disregard that. Now, CJ wasnt in the building and hes a true running mate to Benny so the structure is there. They need growth from within in order for their window to work. All jokes aside, if Ben Simmons finds any sort of resemblance of a jump shot, then take everything I said off the table, but what are the odds on that?
Their GM is a prideful one, and one I really trust to guide the team, so theres hope for the future, maybe it just needs to be adjusted for a little while.
