Power Ranking - PR-Turning Points.

Mar, 07 (Week 13) - The trade front is my bread and butter. I love the problem solving, chess game of it all. Love the banter it breeds and most of all love that it means this league is alive and well… When the deals are well and truly flowing. I’ll be looking into deals across the league, that HAVE or MAY PROVE to be legitimate turning points for each respective franchise. [KLEMMELO]

1 (1)Rating 124
New York KnicksNY13-0

RJ/Harper/Salaun/Jones/Watkins/Proctor. FOR KD/Tre Johnson/Traore. For a franchise in the position of the Knicks right now; They're essentially playing the role of 'Contender' on the way up to a tee. Clever, calculated moves again and again. Taking advantage when the opportunity arises. Expertly assessing where their team is and it's needs... These are all common traits of a GM/Front office who know exactly what the assignment is. If you're not drafting a future franchise star then you have to go out and get him. In a nut shell it's RJ/Harper for KD... Which by all accounts, seems fine on paper for both sides. The kicker is the Knicks sent out a bunch of young 'prospects' in the deal... But somehow managed to end up with the best of the lot in Tre and Traore. Impressive stuff.

Up2 (4)Rating 89
Oklahoma City ThunderOKC9-3

Curry/Caruso/Hardy FOR Fox/Simons/Deni/Shannon. It was THE move that sent shockwaves through the NSL. A newly appointed GM for the Thunder making his first true 'mark' on the franchise he took over. At the time, on paper, it looked 'fine'. I mean you're never going to get the value you think you should dealing an aging star. OKC got back a legitimate franchise PG in Fox, Simons forever the 'glitch' type guard with size and Deni had shown flashes of being a solid role player. No one knew Deni would go up THIS many levels so by all accounts this deal was a massive win for OKC under new management.

Up3 (7)Rating 82
San Antonio SpursSA9-4

Hart/Clarke/Terry/Olbrich/2nd FOR Gobert/Tyson. The Spurs have remained dominant, Atop the West. So I wouldn't exactly class this deal as a 'Turning point'. Rather, another chapter in sustained excellence. Obviously Gobert has since moved on but he DID end up the meat and potatoes in a future deal for Pascal. It's the ability to recognize and address the teams needs and flaws at such a high level for me. As to why Nels is one of the best we have. To be able to continue to trade stars for stars instead of just pulling the pin and losing value... It's the backbone to why, they've been forever a contender.

Up4 (5)Rating 79
Washington WizardsWas8-4

Aaron Wiggins/Roddy FOR R.Williams. Not quite the 'Blockbuster' move we've seen among other franchises at the top... But a big part of being a contender for an extended period of time is NOT doing too much on the trade front. Making tertiary deals that see you obtain better rotational depth or fit. Low risk/High reward deals is where it's at. Sure I like Wiggins as a solid rotation guy... But compared to what the Timelord brings in game in terms of positive impact; The difference is night and day. Williams past injury history has of course come into play here and by HIS standards he's suited up quite regularly for the Wiz. Offering them size and versatility across multiple positions. Winning move for sure.

Up5 (6)Rating 76
Houston RocketsHou8-4

K.George FOR Clowney/2nd. A similar type of deal to that mentioned above with the Wizards. Moving out a young prospect for another that fits your teams needs a little better. Vit hasn't exactly been a renowned force on the trade front. Quality over quantity in this instance because almost ALL deals from memory have made a ton of sense for them and panned out nicely.

Up6 (12)Rating 75
Golden State WarriorsGS9-3

Harris/Allen/2x 1sts FOR Garland. Daz took over the Dubs off the back of winning gold in the way of a champsionship. NO ONE saw this move coming and the 'easy path' would've definitely been to remain in the well deserved spotlight and attempt to solidify greatness. Instead he zigged when almost no one would zag given the same scenario. In the space of a season and change the change in Golden State and their future prospects is obvious and clear. A move like this being able to bring in a legitimate All Star talent is something to be admired.

Up7 (9)Rating 74
Milwaukee BucksMil9-3

BI/Dort/Yanic/1st FOR Kawhi/DJJ/1st. Look on paper this deal makes a lot of sense on both sides. It sucks that a guy like Kawhi even at this stage in his career, with his impact in game being super obvious, has been plagued by injuries and bad health. That being said he has had one of his 'healthiest' seasons this year by a long shot. So this move in terms of getting your team 'over the hump' is the epitome of any deal done to take a contender to the next level. Corndog is all in and I'm all about the gamble.

Down8 (3)Rating 70
Miami HeatMia8-4

CJ FOR Wiggins. I love CJ. He's my boy. So much so that I've brought him back for a second stint with the Kings. The difference is our season is all for nothing while the Heat, after years and years of unlucky injuries and a bunch of circumstances out of their control, have finally seemed to turn a corner. Wiggins is the exact prototype of what Pete likes in a 2K player. Size, versatility and impact on both ends. Almost non of which comes with what CJ brings in game, at THIS stage of his career. Wiggins has fell into play almost seamlessly. Dropping 20+ pts a night from day dot. For a GM who doesn't tend to dabble a whole lot on the trade front, this move is top notch stuff.

Down9 (2)Rating 68
LA LakersLAL8-4

Cade/Chet/Kessler/WCJ/Clayton Jnr FOR Wemby/Donte/Nurk/Rozier/Tillman. I mean... It kind of goes without saying doesn't it? The Lakers would've STILL been more then solid with the players they sent out if this move didn't end up going down.. BUT in terms of staying true to the title, pun intended... I'd be hard pressed to find another deal, that meets the requirements, of being a true turning point for a franchise. The cherry on top was the rest of the 'trade filler' included in the deal in the way of guys like Nurk and Donte. BOTH guys are more then solid in game and proved to be very handy for the Lakers, filling legitimate rotational minutes.

Down10 (8)Rating 65
Indiana PacersInd7-6

Rui/Risacher/2nd FOR Brooks/K.Williams/2nd. Look the jury is still out on what exactly Risacher will pan out to be, time SEEMS to be against him on that front when it comes to living up to the hype. Rui is what he is and at least IN GAME doesn't exactly translate to what he is in the NBA. So to pair them two in a deal, at a position they were already stacked in, for a guy like Brooks who is thriving atm... It's some pretty nifty dealing if im being honest. Brooks will never have come into this Pacers situation lighting the world on fire... But his skillset and impact on both ends just adds ANOTHER position for them that is elite in that regard.

Down11 (10)Rating 63
Portland Trail BlazersPor7-5

Mitchell/SEVENTEEN Picks FOR Edwards. The obvious choice here would probably the move they made for Luka. I can't exactly argue against that BUT I will say that with what Ant brings in game, on both ends, could very well be the driving reason behind the Blazers continued success. This deal barely even put a dent in their treasure chest of draft capital. They STILL have 16 1st round picks over the next 5 years, locked and loaded and ready to fire away. More moves will come obviously and I highly doubt the league as a whole is remotely ready for it.

Up12 (17)Rating 55
Cleveland CavaliersCle7-4

Barnes/Fontecchio/Hayes FOR Bane/Podz/Hendricks/3x 1sts/2nds. Probably one of the most hotly contested/controversial deals in recent memory. Not really about which side necessarily got the 'better end' of it... More so it being a fascinating insight into each franchises possible future and the motivations behind a GM pulling the trigger on any given deal. Obviously it's hard to judge this deal in the moment. A lot of it, especially on the Cavs end of things has yet to come to pass. On paper you could argue Bane being a good fit for the Cavs but time will tell.

Down13 (11)Rating 54
Chicago BullsChi7-5

AG/Herb/Edwards/1st/2nds FOR Franz. I'd love to have guys like AG and Herb on my team. The classic 'glue guy' type rotation pieces that could take an already strong team to the next level... That being said though, I don't think you'd give a lot of thought to giving up these types of guys for a guy like Franz. sure his 'value' has plateaued just a little bit and the hype around him has gone a little quiet. By no means though is he in any territory at all that would have him labeled a 'bust' or a 'failure'. Maybe expectations just needed to be tempered just a tad... Which is exactly when you need to be pulling the trigger on a deal like this.

Up14 (19)Rating 54
Denver NuggetsDen7-5

Mitchell/Richards/2nd FOR Kyrie/Jackson/Hunter/3x 1sts/2nd. I'm not 100% exactly on the motivations behind the deal. Yes, yes I know the Nuggets got back 3 firsts in the deal but I've never exactly been a fan of shipping legitimate All star talent in their prime... For a few rolls of the dice in the hopes of drafting said calibre of talent they just sent packing. Regardless, I don't want to sit here and act like Uncle Drew is just 'salary filler'. There IS a world that he comes back strong and ups his value again. You can't argue at all with what he brings in game, which at his best, is arguably on the level of that which Donavon displays... Time will tell.

Down15 (13)Rating 53
Charlotte HornetsCha6-6

Derozan/OG/3x 1sts/2nds FOR Pascal/Clarke/Smith/2x 1sts. This all kind of seems like a mute point. Given that OG GM Craig has since jumped ship to the Jazz. Regardless, this move still carries a lot of weight in the upcoming future of the Hornets, whoever it is that eventually lands the job. Demar was and is on his way down. Probably right up there in terms of All Time 2K glitch team but this deal is a great example of turning waning talent, into 2K gold. Both extending the teams short/long term prospects while continuing to contend at a high level.

Down16 (15)Rating 47
LA ClippersLAC6-7

Harris/Eason for Hartenstein/J-Rich. Harris is still, a more then serviceable 3/4 that would start on most teams. I love a young guy like Eason and what he brings but obviously his career 'peak' is yet to be seen. Hartenstein is the obvious choice between both ends of this deal, in terms of what you would rather going off how it stands TODAY. It's a shame that he's struggled to stay healthy this season but in game his impact is undeniable. Credit to the Clippers in their patience and ability to build a roster.

Up17 (20)Rating 44
Memphis GrizzliesMem6-6

Bam FOR Kon/Queen/Aaron Wiggins. I’ve gotta say, in the moment I was really undecided on how I felt on this deal. What Bam IS and what he brings in game doesn’t need to be repeated. In terms of getting REAL tangible value back for a guy of his calibre… The return back then seemed to leave a lot to be desired. Dont get be wrong, I was very high on Kon and Queen and what their possible skillset could offer and evolve into… BUT I just didn’t even dream that Kon would be THIS NBA ready from the jump. It would seem that this move was a home run for the Grizz and as much as I hate giving David any sort of props… I’ll live with the thought of him sitting here reading this, with that big dumb face of his and that smug grin plastered across it.

Up18 (25)Rating 43
Orlando MagicOrl6-6

Kyrie/Ziaire/1st FOR Miller/Strus/D.Wade/2x 1sts. Mailo has and always will be a quiet achiever, working behind the scenes for the most part, keeping to herself. The fact of the matter is she IS a certified OG of this league and although it’s not her style to be coming in hot on the constant, full of faux bravado and testosterone… I love seeing the Magic really turning a corner as of late. I’m pretty high on Miller to be honest. His stock along with the NBA Hornets; Seem to be skyrocketing right now. In a nutshell this deal on face value looks to be a massive win. Getting back a young, budding All Star in the making, along with multiple firsts for Kyrie is just elite dealing. The icing on the cake is the fact she was able to fan-dangle her own 27 and 29 firsts BACK to further solidify their future.

Down19 (18)Rating 36
Philadelphia 76ersPhi5-7

Demar/Draymond FOR Zion/Clarke/1st. It’s truly been a roller coaster of events this season for Ole mate Benny and his Sixers. From looking like a legitimate force early on. With a roster on paper, looking like they’re primed to compete… To it all quickly coming to a head, unraveling suddenly off the back of the news of Jimmy going down for the season. I’ve criticised Benny in the past for at times, perhaps not recognising when the writing is on the wall… Guilty as charged on the same offences myself to be fair. With that being said, I can’t remember the last time I saw Benny make the savy veteran move, cutting his losses and doing what’s “right” for his team in the long run. So for that, he deserves the upmost respect. In terms of this trade being a net positive, Zion really JUST needs to stay on the court. It’s slowly trending upwards and I think the odds of him all of a sudden falling off a cliff completely… Are FAR less then him finding some sort of consistency over the next few years at least.

Up20 (22)Rating 36
Utah JazzUtah6-6

Dyson FOR Bey/1st. There's a bunch of deals made by both GMs of the Jazz I could choose from. I'd prefer to focus on the now with Craig at the helm. The obvious shift in direction and intent as soon as he stepped in the door needs to be highlighted. Every Aussie in this league, of course has a soft spot for Dyson and his talents... But let's be real, in terms of his impact in game I think he's just one of 'those guys' that may very well never translate across in full. Something I know for a fact a guy like Craig is well aware of. So do get a guy of similar value in Bey along with a first is good dealing. Bey will always be far more '2K friendly' and his size and versatility offers so much more then that of a specialist like Daniels.

21 (21)Rating 35
Dallas MavericksDal5-7

Turner FOR Deni/Love/Batum. Franchising defining move I think... Turner has looked pretty '2K friendly' as of late. His impact on the defensive end is undeniable. BUT he is a real specific skillset player, whos value is only as good as the balance he is providing. On certain nights he can very much be mismatched against Bigs with real size. Deni has all the check boxes ticked, on his way up to being a legit franchise level guy. It's a no brainer on LJ's end. Kudos Sir.

Down22 (14)Rating 31
Atlanta HawksAtl5-7

White/Stewart/Gabe/2nd FOR Camara/Donte/Terry. I mean look, I'm a majority share holder on Camara Island myself. So I get it. I DO love the versatility of what guys like White and Stewart bring in game... Perhaps I'm too focused on the 2K side of things. Saying it out loud now though, the smarter move is for Camara. Donte's bounce back season in the NBA, holding his value in the NSL a little more, tips it.

Up23 (27)Rating 28
Phoenix SunsPho4-8

Started with Monk/Okoro... For this one I want to highlight a series of small deals over the course of a season from our boy Laddas. Wanting to shine light on it as the perfect example as to how this guy manages to turn franchises around. Monk and Okoro netted him Vassel. Vassel straight up for RJ followed by RJ for Lopez and NAW... 4 or 5 smaller came shortly after, passing off players not in the long term plans for draft capital. The end result for Monk and Okoro? Ayo/DLO/Conley/1st/6x 2nds. That's elite dealing right there and as a serial trade pest myself, it's important to remember where you started from. Regardless of wether you took a couple of slight L's along the way.

Down24 (16)Rating 26
Minnesota TimberwolvesMin5-8

Jimmy for PG/Fears/Brea. This was obviously prior to Jimmy going down for the season. Which look, I'm not about to bring in a parade for the Minny GM having some sort of oracle like prediction powers. But at the end of the day a lot of these deals don't shake out in a positive light without a bit of luck. PG is a glitch in game and the true outcome of this deal will hinge on how Minny navigate his situation. All that aside, Fears looks to be a handy young prospect on the rise and if they had sat on dealing Jimmy it could've been a real disaster.

Up25 (29)Rating 18
Sacramento KingsSac4-8

Cam Johnson/GTJ/Broome for CJ. The Kings took a swing on Cam Johnson, new situation alongside a generational talent in Joker. Off the back of a season with the nets putting up legit numbers... It all sounds good on paper right? Well it cost them one of their own future firsts and after a failed experiment in Cam the Kings off loaded him for CJ. In the moment looks like a win but for what? He's expiring and it may very well be that he walks for nothing.

Down26 (23)Rating 16
Detroit PistonsDet3-10

Zubac/1st FOR Gafford/1st. Face value you might think that's selling super low for a guy like Zu. BUT it is for their own 2026 first back. The Pistons have well and truly waved the white flag and this upcoming draft is loaded at the top end. Time will tell but they may pick up a legitimate franchise cornerstone hopefully reviving old mate Sheed and his struggling Pistons.

Down27 (24)Rating 2
New Orleans PelicansNO2-10

Luka/Monk FOR Dame/Harper/3x firsts/2nd. It's so hard to deal generational type guys like Luka, let alone still young and approaching their prime... And NOT have it look like a fleece job. I love Harper and everything he's about but you'd have to expect him to steadily go up levels every season to be happy about the sting that comes with losing Luka. Obviously getting back their own 2026 1st was big here and depending on where the Pels fall to, they could see themselves pairing Harper with another budding star. Offloading Dame for any real value ASAP is another variable coming into play here.

Down28 (26)Rating -2
Brooklyn NetsBkn2-10

OG/TJ/Aaron Wiggins/Duop/2x 2nds FOR KAT/GG/Jalen Smith/Sandro. Massive win. I'm convinced I am missing another part in this trade because as much as I love guys like OG and TJ. To get back a top tier big in KAT is huge for this franchises future. A number of other deals completed by the Nets GM has seen them bring in a tidy core of guys to build around. In a season spent racking up a lot of L's the Nets have started to turn it all around in probably their most active season yet on the trade front. Nice work.

Up29 (30)Rating -7
Boston CelticsBos2-10

Garland/1st for Kyshawn/Scoot/Bogdan/Clayton Jnr/Fontecchio/1st. I know the Celtics were trying to offload Garland all season long. Being aware of his deficiencies in game as a smaller guard along with the fact he wasn't the best fit. It was obvious why the Celtics were choosing that route. Kyshawn looks really nice and the Jury is still out on Scoot. A couple of handy young rotation guys in the making... And pick swap rights between SAC/BOS on a future first... Was it worth it though?

Down30 (28)Rating -31
Toronto RaptorsTor0-13

Fontecchio/3x 1sts FOR Lively/Amari. The first obvious trade here I could've looked at as a real turning point was the Raptors blockbuster deal sending out KAT and Brunson. With so many parts involved, subsequent smaller deals that followed and a bunch of future assets who's outcome is yet to be seen; We'll bookmark that now and revise in due time. Instead we drill down on a more recent deal where the Raps sent out 3 firsts for Lively. Now granted, 2/3 were Bucks 1sts so lets just assume they're pretty late in the first round. But sending out their own 2030 1st, given Lively' situation... Just seems like a lot of risk that didn't need to happen. It's also deal that puts a dent in their draft capital cache' that possibly could've been used to net a star if they just stayed patient. With all that being said though, Lively is young and he IS a certified glitch. May very well make me look pretty stupid once it all pans out.

What a deep dive! Love this write up!

Dylan 03/08 05:30 am

Yeah was basically a swing on Lively's potential. I don't expect the Bucks to be bad anytime soon and I didn't own the rights to the 2030 felt it was a no brainer to swing

KLEMMELO 03/07 09:34 pm

Ah fair. If you get lively back of old then that’s a win.

Dylan 03/07 08:47 pm

Portland own the swap rights for the 2030 there Klemm. Even if there is value in that pick it wasn’t my value

ljmaverick 03/07 08:33 pm

The legend speaks truths!

jmac 03/07 03:55 am

Great writeup so far mate. Very informative.
