Center by Committee?
Philly Frills: 3/11/2023
Still only
days since finding out that their starting center and defensive anchor, Steven
Adams, is set to miss the entire season, the 76ers are yet to fully decide
which way to move forward. Blowing it up hasnt come to the table. Some of the
pieces people have enquired about since, suggesting a step back this year might
be on the cards, were probably more likely to be traded pre-Adams injury than
since because they cant really be replaced and arent really top the of tree
types anyway.
So, who
starts now and how much does it affect things? Through the pre-season, Adams
looked like he could be a one man defensive unit at times racking up steals and
blocks in different slider settings (not necessarily the in-season ones), and
thats tough to replace, rebounders, they have, but the rest? Who gets the nod.
Omer Yurtseven
Yurt is the
front runner. Hes been here before, starting and ripping down double doubles
as a rookie behind his elite rebounding ratings. Hes also been the clear favourite
for the reserve role when Adams was considered healthy, and has averaged 6
points and 8 rebounds a game off the bench in 14.5 minutes through the
pre-season.
DayRon Sharpe
The other
big man in Philadelphia, Sharpe has been sitting on the fringe of the rotation
through the pre-season after starting 41 of 82 games last year, mostly at PF
when he was eligible to play there. He averaged 7 points and 10 rebounds last
year and has nothing in his ratings to suggest hed be any worse this year with
good speed for a big, and great Offensive rebounding ratings. Hell definitely
be in the rotation now, but will it be as a starter or a reserve?
Sims arrived
in Philly only days before the Adams news, and that was a complete fluke to be
honest. There was no knowledge of Adams injury prior and the decision had been
to bring in a big man who can play PF, to bolster the bench. With this in mind,
it might still be that he plays the same role that was intended rather than
sliding in as a starter, as that would mean that only one of Yurtseven or
Sharpe would be rotational otherwise, if Sims was starting at the 5. Same goes
for Achiuwa sliding up. Starting in Golden State though through the pre-season
he was averaging 17 points and 15 reboundsso the potential is plain to see. Hell
feature heavily regardless, as you can imagine.
These guys
will all likely get a shot at trying to fill some of the hole Adams has left,
and it will likely be a genuine Center by committee situation to fill that
hole. There are worse options out there though than these three guys, so well
see what happens in the wash down. Maybe an FA will be called upon, instead?
Not long to go now!
