Drafting: Pick 42
Philly Frills: 3/08/2022
After a
couple of deals going down, the Philadelphia 76ers next turned their full focus
to the draft, finally. They had done no scouting this year until only days
before the draft and in that time they did the deep dive focussing on players
in their drafting range. This strategy works nicely, and has for them in the
past too, but doesnt really allow for drafting curve balls
Pick 42: Peyton Watson![]()
The plan
this year round, after looking for those stash picks the last few years, was to
take players that can contribute possibly even now, and be on contract. So when
Peyton Watson dropped the pick 42 after being pick 30 in the NBA, the choice
was a no brainer one for the 76ers organisation. Watson will be on contract
next year, hes a 68 19 year old wing with a 70 wingspan and despite being
raw, hes already got a prolific nose for defensive impact and the potential to
grow into an offensive game.
Honestly, I
knew nothing about him other than hed averaged 3 points a game last year in
college, said Nenjabin. His measurables and style seem to fit us perfectly
and we dont need him to impact the floor right now, so the gamble on a
comparative bargain was an easy decision.
Watson was
drafted the NBA Nuggets who have had a checkered history of developing rookies,
with guys like Jarred Vanderbilt needing to get out of town before getting a
foothold, but others like Bones Hyland landing roles immediately. Watson
figures to possibly sit with the former rather than the latter, with his need
for development over time, but he is a tantalising prospect to have from the
low down draft spot of 42, where 2way contracts are usually a win.
Welcome to
Philadelphia, Peyton Watson.
