Free Agency- Navigating the Chaos
Rumours have swirled around in San Antonio since the goat, Lebron James, arrived in the blockbuster deal that shipped off Finals MVP Damian Lillard.
Though all appears steady on the surface, the San Antonio organisation have been like the proverbial duck on water, kicking frantically to stay afloat below the surface. Salary restraints mean Spurs management will need to find clever, cost effective ways to replace some of the outgoing champions from 2020-21.
Thankfully, management have acquired the capital to do so in free agency after moving handy addition Dorian Finney-Smith for second round picks, which will almost certainly be used to continue to accumulate gm points. Freeing up that roster spot also releases the financial restraints on roster building as the Spurs have one less multi million dollar contract to fit.
After navigating the financial trade rules, the Spurs are extremely confident they will retain Nerlens Noel and JaMychal Green. Discussions have been swirling at potential ways to bring Reggie Jackson back after he played a vital role in the playoff run.
Jimmy Butler and Jrue Holiday have both been extended for multiple years and will continue to push this franchise in the winning direction on both the offensive and defensive ends throughout the 2021-22 season. "We're a team of dogs here, Jrue, myself, Nerlens and Lebron, we looking for a fight every night." Jimmy Butler on the responding to questions about team outlook for the upcoming season.
To add to the excitement in San Antonio, Terrance Mann appears ready to breakout out in the NBA. After a big preseason earning almost 30 minutes per night, Mann has continued his form in the season opener. Terance Mann will likely play a similar role for the Spurs in the upcoming season, playing heavy minutes off the bench as Jimmy, Lebron and Jrue alternate their rest intervals. His contract tied with his ability makes him a golden asset for San Antonio which earned him an extra 2-year, $20 million extension upon arrival in his new city. When asked about the extension GM Nelson was elated, "Terance will be a key component for us this coming season. We hope he sees our extension as complete faith in his ability and we know he will reward us with what he produces on the court. His next two years at the minimum will help us to navigate cap difficulties with Jimmy, Jrue and Lebron and we feel he will be ready to make the leap into stardom when his extension kicks in."
