Philly News: Fultz-On!
Philly Frills – 17/02/2025
The 76ers
have had some bad luck this year in the form of injuries hampering a squad that
has looked down right dangerous at times when they get the players on the
court, but maybe things are finally turning around for them? This past week
they got Ajay Mitchell back for a week, and while newly acquired Reggie Jackson
and Jaden Springer were sitting out due to clerical issues, alongside Dejounte
Murray, the squad was healthy otherwise and ripped through their week with 4
straight wins. It was the debut of the Paul George era, which who knows how
long it might last, but it looked good on paper, even with a semi cobbled
together Point Guard rotation.
This week
coming, with Mitchell back on the shelf and the clerical issues still not
sorted with their other point guards, the 76ers were going to have to play a
pair of 2way rookies through the position and hope for lightning in a bottle. Until,
they didn’t have to.
Welcome to
the Philadelphia 76ers, Markelle Fultz!
Markelle put
his name back into the free agent ring as the week was drawing to a close last
week, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for the short handed 76ers.
They placed their bid and got their man, presenting an immediate chance to
start to the former #1 overall draft pick whose career has been derailed by
injury and mental health issues. He performed well for the Miami heat last
season and was a favourite of GM Pistol, who held on to his cap hold until the
last moment through the offseason in the hope of him returning. Miami attempted
to bring him back now, too, but the 76ers won the chance.
What will
Fultz bring? At the very least, he should anchor the 76er PG spot down the
stretch of the season instead of relying on random “healthy” weeks from long
term injury guys and 2way signings. He might even keep rookie Ajay Mitchell out
of the starting line up once he returns to finish the year. He’s the best
option they have, immediately, now and maybe for the rest of the year as long
as he too can stay healthy and he plays at even half the level he is capable of
playing at in the NBA.
Is the 76ers
luck finally turning? Can they have a strong 2nd half to the year?
Markelle is just one step in that right direction. Good luck to him.
