NSL Insider - Top 10 Centers NSL Part 2

by CraigB, updated on Monday, July 17 2023, 02:01 am EST

Welcome to NSL end-of-season player rankings. Top 10 Centers in the NSL Part 2, 6 - 10.

This list is ranking the top 10 centers in the NSL/NBA 2K23. These rankings are based partially on NBA 2k player overall rating and my opinion on how they fit within an NSL team structure.

  • No. 6 Karl-Anthony Towns - 86 - Towns is as enigmatic as he is talented. At 70 and 248 lbs, he has true center size. He also has been able to package that size with above-average mobility along with a sweet shooting touch, and you have a player with an offensive game that is very reminiscent of a taller Carmelo Anthony. KAT, when fully engaged can get buckets in a way that truly seems effortless.  Karl-Anthony does have a tendency though to become disengaged and sort of go through the motions. This is even more apparent on defense where he more or less treats the concept as an afterthought. His rebounding has suffered as well over the past two to three years which is causing him to lean more into the one-dimensional player as post-defense near elite-level rebounding is a near-absolute requirement for a player his size. With that being said. His offensive arsenal keeps him among the top 10. But he is fading.

  • No. 7 Myles Turner - 85 - Turner is another enigma. At 611 and 250 lbs. The physical attributes are locked in. What makes him enigmatic though is his consistent lack of availability. Over the past four years, he has averaged about 50 games or so which is extremely disappointing for a player that has the talent to anchor your defense and be at least a 3rd option on offense. Not a prolific scorer, but he can get it done out of almost any set that is run for him. A competent post player with shooting range out beyond the arc. Defenses have to honor him no matter where he is on the court. Speaking of defense, that is where Myles shines. A near elite level post defender that can patrol the paint and block shots that would make even Gandolf proud (YOU SHALL NOT PASS!). He is also an adequate perimeter defender capable of not getting burned too much when forced to switch. Turner is a great center that just lacks the consistent availability require for a teams 3rd best player.

  • No. 8 Robert Willians III - 83 - The best ability is availability. For a player nicknamed Time Lord being in place and on time just seems to be an incomprehensible concept. At 69 and 237 lbs he is admittedly a bit smaller than most centers in the league. Despite that fact, he is an elite-level post-defender that sees the court in Matrix-like Bullet-time enabling him to see things and react in ways that have you not believing what you saw. Capable of blocking multiple shots, getting the rebounding and flicking the ball to the appropriate ballhandler all in a single sequence. Williams is the kind of player you want anchoring your defense. That kind of high motor is contagious and the defensive IQ can cover a myriad of potential deficiencies across the roster. Although he is extremely limited offensively he is a constant lob threat due to his athleticism and a 2nd chance points machine because of his elite offensive rebounding. Unfortunately, he is averaging less than 20 NBA games per season for the past 5 years. If he can solve the Rubick's cube of availability he could be one of the best in the game.

  • No. 9 Deandre Ayton - 84 - Ayton is a top 3 talent among centers. At 611 and 250 lbs he has a near-perfect balance of size and mobility. DeAndre however, either through periodic indifference or lack of love for the game can be furiously inconsistent. Capable of overpowering most post defenders Ayton can score anytime he wants to considering he is motivated to get an appropriate position in the paint. He can score efficiently from the mid-range as well and can occasionally knock down a shot from beyond the arc. He is clearly a gifted offensive player that needs to show a little more focus to become a top-rated player. On defense, it's relatively more of the same. All the tools to be elite but the desire just doesnt seem to be there. It is rare to be above average on both the offensive and defensive glass. Imagine if Ayton was actually trying to be good. Perhaps the appropriate coach can reach DeAndre and help him maximize his potential.

  • No. 10 Nikola Vucevic - 84 - Vuc probably deserves to be a little bit higher on this list but there is only so much room on a Top 10 list. With that being said. At 610 and 260 lbs he is definitely a load down in the post. Nikola has decent footwork and is one of the strongest bigs in the league.  He has an excellent mid-range jump shot and is adequate from beyond the arc making him a versatile scorer that defenses have to be accountable for. He is a decent enough playmaker out of the post and is an excellent screen setter. More than capable of imposing his will around the defensive glass. He doesnt have the same effort on the offensive glass and can be completely invisible at times on defense. But plugged into the right system Vucevic is better than average center that can be contributing component to a team with winning aspirations.
