NSL Insider - Best Value FA Pick Upsby Shams, updated on Tuesday, November 08 2022, 11:12 pm EST Best Value FA Pickups: In this Premium the objective is to shine a light onto the FA gets that were cheap and provide lots of value based on that price. With that being said I decided to make criteria with the amount of GM points spent at 25 or below.
Gary Payton II: Payton was left until the end and was gotten cheap because it felt like everyone A spent their MLE or B spent all of their GMs. I thought coming into FA Payton would be a 99 GM guy with how he played in Golden State last year, being below the MLE and not having any loyalty bonus. The night panned out differently with Payton just because of the order of the players. I fully believe if he had been at the start there would have been a 99 dropped on him. With Phoenix getting him at 13 points it is a great value pickup.
Bruce Brown: It is crazy to think a player as good as Brown was picked up for 0 points, as a guy playing valuable minutes in Denver in the NBA. Brown hasnt shown he can be as effective in the NSL as he is in the NBA, but he has the potential to as a 76 overall. I feel like in the right situation he could be very effective, and he wont put up flashy stats, but will provide very good defense. Maybe 2k will finally give him his respect in game too. Brown struggled the first three years in the NBA at shooting the 3, but has since shot over 40% while having an increase from last year to this years while having more volume.
Malik Monk: Monk is another guy who did not get any GMs spent on, but he is still young at only 24 years old and might be getting the bump from 2k to catch up on where he is in the NBA. Monk is also on a 2 year deal which is great to have for a young guy, and I know the Bulls didnt want to lose Beal, but Monk could be a guy with the most upside to fill in at SG for him from this FA class. Monk is averaging many minutes less per game, yet has more assists per game than last year already. Monk expanding his game to becoming a playmaker and also provide the scoring we know he can could lead to long career.
Blake Griffin: I know that Blake is not really getting much run in the NBA, but there are still some things to like about getting him for no cost. Griffin as a former star in the NBA gets more respect from the engine than others and he is still a 76 overall. It is not the most flashy pickup, but getting a guy like Blake who outplays his NBA self in the NSL and is on a minimum is another good get for Chicago. If Blake stops shooting the 3 ball as much as he did last year, he can be much more effective.
Ricky Rubio: Rubio was great value getting with 0 GMs, the value will payoff, it will just come with a wait. He is projected to come back from his injury around February, but is returning to the same NBA team who helped rejuvenate his career last season. The situation is a little different with Mitchell being in Cleveland, but the Cavs know how to utilize Rubio best and can get the best out of him. If Rubio returns to the same form, this is a massive steal, he is also on a 3 year contract and a 78 overall, the big question is will he regress due to injury or age and if so how much?
Tyrese Martin: Martin was one of the few NBA draft picks who was not selected in the NSL Draft and had a standard contract. He looked good in the Summer League and why not take a flyer on a guy like him in FA? Martin is a big guard standing at 66 and being eligible at PG/SG/SF so he could provide productivity in 2k from that. He was picked up by San Antonio, who dropped 1 whole GM point on him. Nels took the big risk and got his guy.
Troy Brown Jr: Brown has been doing well in the NBA and playing lots of minutes for the Lakers in the NBA, he is a guy that is still young at 23 and was a former 1st round pick. The Kings who ended up getting him spent 0 points to add him to the team while the Lakers tried to sway him to LA where he enjoys playing in the NBA by throwing 18 GMs at him. The Lakers record last year was too much of a blemish for him to say yes to Justin. The weird part of Brown that he didnt get many points spent on him is he came into bidding early on so people had points.
Thaddeus Young: Young was a Top 150 guy in the NSL last year and provides that spark on defense a lot of teams want. Houston only had to spend 17 GMs to get their guy and his contract is what you would want it to be as a 2 year contract with next year non-guaranteed, with his age being 34, it allows Vitty to be able to let him go if itll be too much money for the production he provides. Young is eligible to play the SF spot if needed and adds to the already deep Houston roster.
Bruno Fernando: Fernando was a guy we expected more GM points to get put on as he became Houstons starting center, but I guess the injury he has and being a little above the minimum drew peoples attention away. He was obtained by Golden State with just 2 GM points put on, but I could definitely see the move of picking him up pay off. He is too small to run at Center in 2k, but is eligible to play PF as well. His contract makes him an interesting get too having 3 years non guaranteed at cheap prices too.
