NSL Insider - Team by Team: Philadelphia 76ersby Shams, updated on Wednesday, September 28 2022, 11:37 pm EST What went right? The 76ers started the year off hot going 30-19 to
start, the team looked like possible contenders. The team had great production
from Deaaron Fox and we saw the emergence of Omer Yurtseven. Yurtseven signed
with the 76ers in 2021 as an undrafted free agent and played to another level
after he was given the chance. He averaged a double-double and was starting in a
majority of games this year. The team also found some decent production for
another young big with Dayron Sharpe. The team has 2nd round picks
galore and Im not sure what Bens plan is but the more the merrier right? What went wrong? The 76ers season was tough, the team made it into
the play in games, but fell short losing to the Celtics in the 1st
round. CJ McCollum had a tough time
adjusting to the new engine, with a field goal percentage of 38%. He didnt
even get to start in the play in game as Ben tried to figure out a way for the
team to work. The 76ers star player, Deaaron Fox, shot only 16% from three for
the 76ers. Things ultimately just didnt click and may be the reason Ben made
some moves this offseason. The team went 1-19 from 3 in the play in game which
led to a large part in their early exit. Best Trade: Philadelphia acquires DeAaron Fox, Deanthony
Melton, Orlando 2022 1st round pick, OKC 2023 1st round
pick, Minnesota 2026 1st round pick and Miami 2023 2nd
round pick in exchange for Damian Lillard, Vit Krejci, and Chicago 2022 1st
round pick. Damian Lillard only played 28 games in all last
season and 8 more after he was traded. Lillard is a top talent in the league,
but he is older and there is worry with injuries. Fox is a great get as hes
still young and still has more to show. He was great for the 76ers and Melton
was also traded off this offseason for Maxi Kleber and a 1st. To get
a star player plus multiple 1st round picks is great value
especially with how Lillards season went. Worst Trade: The Orlando
Magic send Gordon Hayward, Donte DiVincenzo and Landry Shamet
to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Philadelphia 76ers send Tobias Harris, Cody
Martin and Daniel Gafford to the Orlando Magic. The trade netted
Philadelphia with Hayward who did not play at the level of a guy like Harris
while Gafford had a great season with the Magic this past season. Shamets
money ended up being a problem and he was traded this offseason to get his
money off the books. DiVincenzo is the lone player still with the 76ers. Other Trades: The Philadelphia
76ers send LaMarcus Aldridge and Louis King to the San Antonio
Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Naz Reid and Caleb Martin to
the Philadelphia 76ers. The Philadelphia
76ers sent out Lebron James in exchange for Damian Lillard. The trade for
Damian Lillard was likely a loss as Lebron has still been the same kind of
player he was before and Lillard had injury issues, but Lillard netted Fox plus
more. The trade for Naz Reid and Caleb Martin was a win because they got the
younger big man and Caleb Martin was fairly productive. Star: Deaaron Fox Fox played at an MVP level for the 76ers doing
well in each area aside from his 3 which isnt his game. He averaged 23.6
points per game and 5.1 assists per game and was the guy keeping the team
afloat. Fox was ranked 29th in the NSL last year while still being
very young. He is under contract for four more years and has the team built
around himself. Draft Grades: The 76ers did not have a 1st round pick yet still
took advantage of the draft, getting Peyton Watson who was a 1st
round pick in the NBA, his numbers aren't great from college, but the 76ers
like what they saw on film. I give this pick an A, the value of getting him at
42 is good. The next player picked was Isaiah Mobley, and he has the
talent to be very good, just hasnt put it together like his brother. He still
has an unpolished game, but could be a useful role player in a few years. I
give this pick a B+. The next selection is hard to analyze due to 2k being a game
for length and height. Kenny Lofton Jr is a short big man standing at 67, but
what is really crazy is his athleticism isn't all that great either. He is
super talented and showed up Chet Holmgren in the Summer League. I give his
draft grade an A-. The last pick of the 76ers draft is Jabari Walker, I think
he is a very solid player and could do well in the right situation at the next
level. He led Colorado in scoring and rebounding and has shown he has a bit of
extended range. He isnt the best shooter, but is above average as a big man to
get him in the late draft at pick 54 is great. I give this pick an A. The Future: The team has a bright future with Fox being young, Sharpe
and Yurtseven being two young big men that did well. The team also has a ton of
picks, the 2nds are good add ins for trades later on or to upgrade into a 1st
round pick. The team is not set on the core guys for the long term, so it is
dependent on the moves Ben makes, but I believe he will make the right moves
and has set himself up in a great spot. |
