NSL Insider - Premium: Too early Redraft Pt2

by titlesorbust, updated on Friday, March 04 2022, 12:03 pm EST

Welcome to part 2! In case you missed the first edition, and the ground rules, Ill leave you to the intro. If you remember the spiel, dive right in!

Is it ever too early for a NBA Rookie ReDraft? The answer is absolutely not. Now that were at the All-Star break in the NBA season, it seems like an appropriate time to take a peek back at the offseason and how those selections are panning out for their teams currently.

Some house rules. All statistical analysis is being used from one of my favorite sites, Hashtagbasketball.com. Check them out if youve never played with any of their analytics tools. I wont be using advanced stats for any decision making during this you can make any statistic paint any picture you want painted if you dig deep enough. Were going to stick with the high-level, tip of the iceberg stuff.

Some other factors to consider: Im not taking NSL team fit into account at all. We may discuss the players team success, but not if he should or should not have been selected due to other players on the roster at the time of the draft. I will, however, take into account the position of the player picked relative to his draft mates of the same position. We have to remember, were drafting for a video game, not the NBA. That will almost certainly come up during the decision making process. Lastly, its all for fun. If we disagree on who you should've picked, its not personal. Some of the selections may come down strictly to personal preference. Viva La NSL!

*** Indicates the original selection has since been traded

Pick: 15

Original Selection: Trey Murphy, Los Angeles Clippers via Toronto Raptors

Redraft Selection: Davion Mitchell

Eventually guys like Davion and others simply have to be taken due to value, and this is one of those situations. I will honestly say I havent watched a ton of Trey Murphy in the NBA this year after loving him as a prospect. He doesnt seem to have fit the calling of an elite 3&D prospect on the wing, as hes shooting 34% from deep on the year, but hes also only playing 20 minutes Not sure why he isnt getting more run with the Pelicans situation but I digress. Davion was also touted as a 3&D type guard, and he has left a little to be desired, but Sacramento did trade Tyrese Haliburton in favor of him thats got to say something. The value is just too good here for Davion to be passed up, again.

Pick: 16

Original Selection: Franz Wagner, Utah Jazz via Houston Rockets

Redraft Selection: James Bouknight

Man, what a change from Franz at 16. I listed my concerns with Bouknight in part 1 of the redraft, and they still apply here, but of course were significantly later in the first round. Bouknights smooth stroke from UCONN coupled with his athleticism on the wing makes this a no-brainer for Utah this late in the first, in my opinion. I think Utah was after more of a defensive focus here, but the ability to stretch the floor and how 2K treats 2 guards that can do this is too tantalizing to pass up here.

Pick: 17

Original Selection: ***Kai Jones, Toronto Raptors via Philadelphia 76ers

Redraft Selection: Alperen Sengun

I mentioned that position may come into factor during the redraft, and it does here. If Toronto really wanted a big man here, then Sengun is the pick here simply based on value. Kai has shown some flashes in the G League so far, but it still doesnt look like he can score other than throwing down a lob. Sengun hasnt gotten a ton of minutes in Houston for whatever reason, but hes shown flashes that he can be the versatile 4 that he was touted as. I think Toronto jumps at the opportunity to acquire Alperen rather than the athletic freak of Kai.

Pick: 18

Original Selection: ***Joshua Primo, Memphis Grizzlies

Redraft Selection: Quentin Grimes

I debated a bit here, thinking that perhaps Memphis was after some shooting. However, I think they are just after a guard that can fit in their rotation for years to come. Primo hasnt gotten much play yet, and Memphis has already traded him so making him the redraft pick seems lazy In comes Quenin Grimes! The Houston product was electric in college, and I think Thibs is figuring out that the kid can actually play in the NBA. Quentin Grimes is a sneaky guard to watch in the NBA, NSL and beyond.

Pick: 19

Original Selection: Cameron Thomas, Chicago Bulls

Redraft Selection: Jalen Suggs

Yeah, Suggs finally got drafted. Its no secret Im not a huge fan. I wont trash him much more, but he just hasnt been good. I know, I know. He would never fall this far in a redraft! Well, here we are! Merencio would take the chance on the struggling lead guard happily, I think. Letting go of Cam Thomas would be tough, whos arguably just been straight up better than Suggs, but well let the drama come to an end here at pick 19.

Pick: 20

Original Selection: Keon Johnson, Denver Nuggets

Redraft Selection: Moses Moody

Keeping it in conference with another SEC Guard, Moses Moody slides in nicely here for Diggas Nuggets. Moses has quietly taken over starting duties for Jordan Poole while Klay Thompson is out, while Keon is lucky to get minutes here or there for a tanking Blazers squad. Different play styles, sure. But Moses has shown some of the promise Golden State saw in him before drafting him. A better passer than advertised, Moody fits into the mold of a true starting guard in the NBA, and I think Digga jumps at that promise here late in the first round.

Pick: 21

Original Selection: NaShon Hyland, Denver Nuggets via Indiana Pacers

Redraft Selection: Cameron Thomas

Back to back picks for the Nuggets gives them back to back starting caliber guards. I think Cam will evolve a bit as his years go by, and hes shown he can contribute at a high level in Brooklyn. A little more developed in the shot creation department than Bones Hyland, Cam will give NSL Nuggets some more versatility and lineup freedom than Hyland would. Im sure Digga would love to have NaShon here at 21, but the Clippers made that impossible selecting him at 13 overall.

Pick: 22

Original Selection: Usman Garuba, Los Angeles Clippers

Redraft Selection: Kai Jones

Garuba has had an interesting rookie season in the NBA, and its no fault of his own that hes being passed over here. After struggling to find minutes on a Rockets squad that has no identity, Garuba had a wrist injury and needed surgery last month. Id be shocked if he returns for many minutes this year, but its possible. Los Angeles was going after a defensive anchor in Garuba to assist in rebounding, so why not get another, taller version of that in Kai Jones? The length of Kai and Giannis on the same floor seems a little unfair.

Pick: 23

Original Selection: Chris Duarte, Utah Jazz via Washington Wizards

Redraft Selection: Corey Kispert

Seems like a pretty simple fit for Utah. They were going for the polished contributor in Chris Duarte out of Oregon. They still get a polished contributor, just from a bit farther North. Quietly having a decent season in the NBA, Kispert has performed a little better than I thought he would, honestly. One thing that hasnt translated so far his 3pt %. I will say, Washington hasnt afforded him that many open looks in whatever dysfunctional state they are currently in. Utah continues to have a nice redraft with great value at pick 23.

Pick: 24

Original Selection: Jaden Springer, Dallas Mavericks

Redraft Selection: Joshua Primo

I cant imagine LJ would pass on Josh Primo this late in the draft if he still wanted a guard. If Greg Popovich sees something on the kid, hes got to be worth a dart throw, right? Since the Spurs traded Derrick White, Primo has gotten some pretty good run in the Lone Star State, and has looked solid all things considered. Ill take my chances on the Alabama product this late, regardless of age. Springer has gotten lost in the chaos that is the 76ers season. Hes spent most of his time in the G League, which is great, but just hasnt really shown much on the NBA to warrant remaining the pick here.

Pick: 25

Original Selection: Isaiah Todd, New Orleans Pelicans

Redraft Selection: Usman Garuba

If the Pelicans still want a big man, while of a different mold, Garuba is their man. Weve already gotten the skinny on him earlier in the redraft, so lets discuss Todd. Uber-Athletic. His motor and want to were questioned during the draft process, which I understand. Hes been playing well in G League stints, as he should. If he continues to develop, hes going to be a damn good player.  Im not sure that NOLA wants to wait on Todd to develop a skillset that is pretty easily mimicked in the draft every year. Garuba is the safe pick here for a contender.

Pick: 26

Original Selection: Josh Christopher, Phoenix Suns via New York Knicks

Redraft Selection: Josh Christopher

No change here for Laddas! Josh Christopher had played well, but not quite well enough to move up the board a ton in my opinion. I think Laddas would stick to his scouting and not mix it up here as hes way more patient than I am. Christopher doesnt lack confidence, and hes a scorer. Hes shown that he can do that with his athleticism, so the ceiling is still enticing. I like staying put here too for Phoenix.

Pick: 27

Original Selection: ***Isaiah Jackson, Oklahoma City Thunder via Charlotte Hornets

Redraft Selection: Keon Johnson

Long, athletic wing with a high ceiling this late in the draft? Yes, please. Isaiah Jackson has played limited minutes in Indiana, and hasnt been *bad* per se, but Johnsons ceiling put him here over Isaiah. If Johnson had more play in Portland I think hed be higher on this list, but here we stand.

Pick: 28

Original Selection: ***Tre Mann, Phoenix Suns via Detroit Pistons

Redraft Selection: Kessler Edwards

This was going to be Trey Murphy until I remembered Kessler Edwards existed. Kessler has worked him into a potential championship rotation with the Brooklyn Nets, and is holding his own from downtown which really opens up his game. Elite length, elite physical tools, and an elite motor, Kessler is a cant miss this late in the draft for Laddas. Oh, yeah. He went to Pepperdine, thats pretty cool.

Pick: 29

Original Selection: ***Quentin Grimes, San Antonio Spurs

Redraft Selection: Isaiah Todd

Theres no way someone like Todd would drop completely out of the first round considering his body type and athleticism. The most tantalizing thing to me? He was billed as a new version of Chris Bosh, possibly. His shooting has backed that up, and I didnt think it would. Im honestly surprised he didnt go higher in the original draft, but I guess were seeing why with his limited minutes in the NBA. If this guy ever figures it out good luck to the rest of the league.

Pick: 30

Original Selection: DayRon Sharpe, Philadelphia 76ers via Portland Trail Blazers

Redraft Selection: DayRon Sharpe

Its really hard to argue with a high energy, great athleticism 2K big here at the end of the first, and Im not going to. There isnt really another guy that brings the same thing as Sharpe does that was selected after him. I was tempted to put Isaiah Jackson here, Ive admittedly just watched a bit more of DayRon than I have Jackson. Ultimately, im not sure either would be an upgrade over each other in 2K, so well let Ben feel better about his pick when he reads this.
