NSL Insider - Premium: Too Early 2021 Redraft Pt1by titlesorbust, updated on Monday, February 21 2022, 08:55 am EST Is it ever too early for a NBA Rookie ReDraft? The answer is absolutely not. Now that were at the All-Star break in the NBA season, it seems like an appropriate time to take a peek back at the offseason and how those selections are panning out for their teams currently. Some house rules. All statistical analysis is being used from one of my favorite sites, Hashtagbasketball.com. Check them out if youve never played with any of their analytics tools. I wont be using advanced stats for any decision making during this you can make any statistic paint any picture you want painted if you dig deep enough. Were going to stick with the high-level, tip of the iceberg stuff. Some other factors to consider: Im not taking NSL team fit into account at all. We may discuss the players team success, but not if he should or should not have been selected due to other players on the roster at the time of the draft. I will, however, take into account the position of the player picked relative to his draft mates of the same position. We have to remember, were drafting for a video game, not the NBA. That will almost certainly come up during the decision making process. Lastly, its all for fun. If we disagree on who you should've picked, its not personal. Some of the selections may come down strictly to personal preference. Viva La NSL! *** Indicates the original selection has since been traded Pick: 1 Original Selection: Cade Cunningham, Los Angeles Lakers Redraft Selection: Cade Cunningham Come on, now. I couldnt start out with controversy. There are definitely other arguments here, the most tangible being Evan Mobley. Ultimately, Cade is on a roster in the NBA that isnt tailored to his playing style which is affecting the type of numbers he *could* put up. Even with a lackluster supporting cast, Cade finds himself 2nd among rookies in assists, and leading the field in scoring. His overall efficiency could be better, but we cant put too much pressure on him in this situation to be elite efficiently yet. His FT% is however very good, and well know thats the best indicator to forecast a potential improvement in efficiency from deep. His physical tools, basketball IQ and play style are just too good to pass up with the first pick. Pick: 2 Original Selection: Jalen Green, Atlanta Hawks Redraft Selection: Evan Mobley I thought about this one for a long time. Trying to decide if Atlanta should switch to promising front court presence Evan Mobley for the utility he has displayed turned into a full on debate of big vs. guard in 2K. While Jalen Greens athleticism is awe inspiring, and keeps his sky high potential afloat, I just think its evident hes got some work to do to learn how to play basketball at the NBA level, and Im not alone on that. If Green reaches his potential, this can be revisited. However, it may take well after his rookie contract for that to be realized. Until then? Mobley gets an upgraded apartment in downtown Hotlanta. Much better than living in Milwaukee, if you ask me. Pick: 3 Original Selection: Evan Mobley, Milwaukee Bucks Redraft Selection: Scottie Barnes Has to be Jalen Green, right? Wrong. For the same reason, in retrospect, I would have taken Scottie Barnes over Green as well. This isnt the hottest of takes, as Im sure others feel the same. Scottie has proven himself thus far as a true do it all guy. I thought he would be a better offensive initiator in his rookie year than he has been, but he admittedly hasnt been put in a total of PnR situations as the ball handler. Hes spent his time patrolling the high elbow and the paint and man, hes looked elite in that role. Im a little worried about his on ball, isolation defense, honestly. I thought it would be something for him to lean on, but hes also getting targeted for being on the same team as Pascal and OG both sides of this argument are valid. Scottie may not end up being the best player in the draft, but hes going to be one of the most impactful all around and I think thats the correct pick for Milwaukee here. Pick: 4 Original Selection: Jalen Suggs, Orlando Magic Redraft Selection: Jalen Green If were redrafting the NBA, I think Green slides a few more spots still. Due to the love 2K gives electric, bouncy guards in its current engine, Jalen gets the nod over others. Green just barely beats out some top names including Franz Wagner, Josh Giddey, and Jonathan Kuminga. All three of which I would happily take over Green in an NBA edition of this piece. At the end of the day, Green has Zach Lavine type potential in game due to his play style. But again, how long will it take him to figure that out? I think Orlando would have been happy to wait it out if Green falls to them at 4 overall instead of taking the safer Jalen Suggs. Pick: 5 Original Selection:Scottie Barnes, Minnesota TimberWolves Redraft Selection: Jonathan Kuminga Speaking of athletes Jonathan Kuminga jumps a spot in the redraft and lands in Minnesota in this scenario. The coveted uber-athletic wing mold in 2K is met here, as weve seen flashing of Kuminga being an elite slasher in the NBA thus far. His numbers dont him justice due to the playing time he receives, but he just looks like he belongs. Fight me on this one, and you very well may have a point. There isnt a lot of analytics that point to this being the right decision, I just think Kuminga is too young, too athletic and too headstrong to not deserve a top five selection. I think Ethan would have been happy if this was the way it worked out, but hes also elated to have Scottie. Its the same conundrum as Jalen Green how long will it take? Pick: 6 Original Selection:Jonathan Kuminga, Boston Celtics via Utah Jazz Redraft Selection: Franz Wagner The biggest leaper so far? Franz Wagner. Ill admit, even I was hesitant about Wagners pro potential due to his lack of athleticism, but he has put that to bed rather quickly. Hes shifty enough to stay in front of other wings at the NBA level, and I think its only a matter of time until 2K gives him the same respect. A much more polished wing prospect at this point, Boston wouldnt bat an eye at adding the Michigan prospect to their roster after seeing what he is capable of in the pros. Little stat for you: Most points among NBA rookies? Thats right, Franz Wagner. Pick: 7 Original Selection: Josh Giddey, Utah Jazz via Boston Celtics Redraft Selection: Josh Giddey I think Utah was correct in going after a guard here, and I thought about Jalen Suggs here, but hes just been so bad. Orlando hit on one of their picks in the NBA so far, and it damn sure hasnt been Suggs. His athleticism and speed makes him very interesting in the redraft here for Utah at 7, but Giddey gets the nod. Honestly, I am not obsessed with Giddey long term. I think hell be a good point guard on a good team, but his athleticism worries me, especially on the defensive end against elite guards. I hope 2K uses badges to level this out so it isnt exasperated in the game relative to real life. I have to remind myself it IS pick 7 though, so this value at 7 for Utah remains great after Giddey has impressed. Pick: 8 Original Selection: Davion Mitchell, Cleveland Cavaliers Redraft Selection: Ayo Dosunmu Alright, lets get weird. Only one GM in the league responded and confirmed who they would take in a redraft. It was Dylan, and he was adamant about still selecting Davion Mitchell. While I appreciate his tact and sticking with his guy, Im going with someone who every scout in the league over thought. We have a saying when watching college tape dont get cute. Simply put, dont over complicate what youre watching. Ayo was an elite ISO scorer in college, had a tremendous motor and great speed in the open floor. He was dubbed as too small at 6 4, but his 68 wingspan has more than made up for it. Ayo is playing big minutes for the Chicago Bulls while they deal with injury, and hes turning into one of the steals of the draft. Hes a better version of Davion Mitchell at this point, and I see it remaining that way. Dont kill me, Dylan. Pick: 9 Original Selection: Alperen Sengun, Boston Celtics via Brooklyn Nets Redraft Selection: Herbert Jones If youve been keeping an eye on NBA rookies, you know Herbert Jones is tearing it up. Its not a surprise, either. The man once hit two clutch free throws against a ranked LSU team in college WITH HIS HAND IN A CAST. HE MADE ONE HANDED FREE THROWS. IN all seriousness, Herb has showed his length can translate to explosiveness, which somehow was a concern for this guy? I dont get it. The only thing that could backfire with Boston taking this forward over Sengun is the question of how long can Herb Jones be this efficient from deep? He was touted as a great shooter, but is outperforming that tag right now. He is actually fifth among rookies in FT%, which again we know is a great metric to extrapolate into 3PT% success. Guys hes trailing? Corey Kispert, NahShon Hyland, Trey Murphy and James Bouknight. Four guys that had no questions on their accuracy from distance coming into the year. Pick: 10 Original Selection: James Bouknight, Atlanta Hawks via Oklahoma City Thunder Redraft Selection: Chris Duarte I admittedly didnt really like Bouknight throughout the scouting process as much as others, and some of those concerns have come to fruition thus far. In stretches Ive watched, Bouknight seems to struggle against elite length and speed when it comes to getting his shot off in ISO situations. Drafting a pure scoring guard that was decent at creating tough shots in college is always a red flag to me, but hopefully he can turn it around. Onto the actual pick! I was worried about Duarte for the same exact reasons I was worried about Bouknight. The difference? Chris hasnt looked overwhelmed against the elite athletes of the NBA on a night in and night out basis, but he is a bit older so this is to be expected. I think looking back if Atlanta wanted the same scoring punch at the guard spot they could have gotten the more polished prospect at 10 and been completely satisfied. . Pick: 11 Original Selection: Moses Moody, Boston Celtics via Phoenix Suns Redraft Selection: Tre Mann I know its going to be a while before we get more Moses Moody flashes because of how buried he is in Golden State, but man do a bunch of us look silly on Tre Mann. Ill be honest, I liked him a bit early but talked myself out of him because he was the sole producer on very average Florida teams in college. Am I kicking myself for that now, along with others? Definitely. His shooting stroke is pure, hes fast enough to break guys down off the dribble, and has looked really comfortable doing it. He needs to put on a little weight but man, Tre could have been the steal of the entire draft. Originally selected at 28, Mann makes a nice climb to 11. Pick: 12 Original Selection: Jalen Johnson, Denver Nuggets via Miami Heat Redraft Selection: Jalen Johson You know what, Ill buy this. I liked Jalen coming in, and hoped he would fall to us in the NSL draft @ 14, but it just wasnt in the cards. Jalen is a uber athletic forward who has shown some nice touch from deep but is quite literally buried in the NBA. I dont know how accurate this is, but he has to be near the bottom of the list of minutes played in the NBA for first round picks. Is it because the Hawks know something we dont? Its not like theyre a contender thus far this year, so why not play the kid? Nice value here for Denver at 12 the initial time around, and I think it stands up based purely on two-way potential. Pick: 13 Original Selection: Corey Kispert, Los Angeles Clippers via Sacramento Kings Redraft Selection: NahShon Hyland Aside from having the best nickname in the draft, Hyland may have the best stroke too. The kid has a real life limitless range badge, and knows how to use it. His NBA efficiency needs to improve, but that will come as he learns how to not take such contested shots, in my opinion. Did I mention hes lightning fast? Sounds like a no brainer pick for a 2K redraft. Put on some weight, and Hyland could be an All-Star level scorer in this league. Pick: 14 Original Selection: ***Ziaire Williams, Golden State Warriors Redraft Selection: Ziaire Williams Alright, this will be fun. Redrafting at 14, with guys like Jalen Suggs, Davion Mitchell, Corey Kispert, Sengun and Bouknight still on the board, where will the Warriors go? I guess it comes down to: Do I think these guys listed could be better pros than I feel about Ziaire right now? I know it sounds weird because I just traded him, but I dont think I do. I still like Ziaires combination of length and athleticism at this point in the draft. Before the draft I wouldve told you I was nuts for taking Ziaire over guys like Suggs at this point, but after watching Suggs play Im really not sold. Sorry to be boring, but maybe someone in part two will take the free falling Suggs. |
