NSL Free Agency Recap and Grades

The weekend may be a time for some to rest, recover and prepare for the coming week but in the NSL it was all business. The first ever NSL Free Agency Day was nothing short of spectacular as the league put on a historic day filled with signings and blockbuster trades that sent shockwaves through the league.

After months of planning and development the league admin team added another dimension to the worlds greatest league, achieving a smooth and exciting showcasing of everything the fans love about the NSL- action, rumours, banter and player movement.

Theres no doubt there were a number of winners during the Free Agency Frenzy. The admin team get the first A+ for the day and a number of teams have strengthened their position early in the season to rival the defending champions (Portland). Lets take an in-depth look at all the names and grades from NSL FA Frenzy.

Team

Main Additions

Summary

Grade

Atlanta

Dario Saric
Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot
2021 1st Round Pick (Portland)

Altanta made a shift of focus at the conclusion of last season, looking to the future after a blockbuster trade moving Joel Embiid. They managed to add to their core with Dario Saric on a team-friendly 3-year contract, while adding to their booty of picks with another 2021 first round draft pick, which came at the expense of aging offensive star Carmelo Anthony.

Summary: Steady as she goes. Madonna

B

Boston

Marc Gasol
Jerami Grant (via trade)

Boston shocked the world. Twice. First, they cleverly landed breakout candidate Jerami Grant using their massive cap space and very little else. Grants contract is a whopper but his situation is compelling, making him an asset to contending or buying teams.

Marc Gasol was the second shockwave GM Toby sent through the league. Late in the day, GMs were preparing their bedtime cup of team (4pm Aus time) when Gasol was available for bidding. Boston had saved their pennies for a gigantic bid on the skilled big man. The steal was activated and Gasol became a Celtic. Rumour tells this writer that Gasol might be on the move in week 5. We will be watching closely to see what else the Celtics add to the Tatum core.

Summary: Surprise Cockfags! -Team America

A

Brooklyn

Jakob Poeltl (re-sign)
DeAndre Bembry (re-sign)
Damyean Dotson
Tyus Jones (via trade)

Brooklyn GM Bo simply did what he needed to do. He kept his boiee Jakob Poeltl who could be poised for a breakout in his new contract. He re-signed Bembry who has the potential to be a versatile bench piece on a good team and nd most importantly, Bo shifted some salary in Patty Mills while bringing back a useful backup in Tyus Jones. No blockbuster here though.

Dont stop, never give up, hold your head high and reach the top, let the world see what you have got. Bring it all back to you.- S Club 7

B-

Charlotte

Jae Crowder
Wayne Elington
Gary Clark

Charlotte went into Free Agency with an incredibly talented roster with a little cap room to play with. GM Craig patiently waited for his moment to strike and picked up one of the bargains of the day, bidding 2 GM points for Jae Crowders 3 year $10 mil contract. At 30 years old Crowder has plenty of good years ahead of him and he fits as a perfect 3 and D option in a talented roster.

Summary: Thank you, come again -Apu

B+

Chicago

Anthony Davis (re-sign)
Hassan Whiteside
Juwan Morgan

The toast of the town on FA day was the Chicago Bulls who went ahead and added one of the most valuable players on one of the most team friendly contract in the NBA- Hassan Whiteside. Yes, Hassaan is a headache in real-life, but 2k is yet to translate personality/mentality into the game meaning Whiteside is one of the best centres in the game. A scary prospect now he is on the Bulls roster.

Oh, did I forget to mention GM Merencio also retained the best big man in the game Anthony Davis? Well yeah, he did that too. Step over Portland, it looks like we have a new number 1 contender.

Summary: Heres the deal Im the best there is. Plain and simple. I wake up in the morning and I piss excellence. Ricky Bobby

A+

Cleveland

Paul Millsap (via trade)- Kleber
Elfrid Payton (via trade)
Avery Bradley
Carmelo Anthony (via trade)
JaMychal Green
Jahlil Okafor
David Nwaba

An early trade gave Cleveland the points they needed to retain their number one target Danilo Gallinari. GM Dylan was so keen to retain his boiee he bid an additional 80 on top of the 50 re-sign bonus to place a whopping 130 point bid for the PF. Gallo was then moved on to Miami for a package including Paul Millsap (who will be traded again) and Elfrid Payton. GM Dylan was savvy in his remaining bids bringing in a solid support cast for his young core, headlined by a trade to land veteran scorer Carmelo Anthony. Overall it was a busy and solid day for the Cavs but could they have brought in another young core piece with the Gallinari trade?

Summary: Nobody knows if the stock is going up, down, sideways or in circles. You know what fugazi is? -Wolf of Wallstreet.

B

Dallas

Fred VanVleet (re-sign)
Patrick Patterson

Dallas were capped to the testicles but only had Fred Vanvleets large contract to retain. The rest of the roster was contracted and ready to go behind the return of K.D. Porzingis doesnt appear to far away so all that was required was for GM LJ to retain their guy. Did he do it? You bet.

Summary: Mission accomplished -Tom Cruise

B+

Denver

Bruno Caboclo
Pat Connaughton

Willy Hernangomez

The list to the left doesnt inspire a whole lot of praise but before being critical, lets understand Denvers situation. They have Curry and Klay which is about 150 badges (gross overestimation) in two players. Klay is dead, meaning 70 of those badges dont matter. Why does this matter? Well, most of the calculations were based on badges and win/loss from previous season.

Denver were the poster boy for what position you dont want to be in going into Free Agency. They still managed to add Hernangomez who is a handy Centre in 2k and Connaughton who can play. Their bad luck continued when Bruno Caboclo was waived following the James Harden trade in the NBA. Its been an unlucky run for the Nuggets who, to their credit, have taken it all in their stride. 1 Like = 1 Prayer.

Summary: This wedding is horseshit Stepbrothers

D

Detroit

Goran Dragic (re-sign)
Tristan Thompson
Ty Jerome
Javonte Green

An underrated free agency by a savvy GM in Sheed. They Pistons managed to retain Dragic and add to their stable of giants with a terrific bid on Tristan Thompson. If this team doesnt lead the league in rebounds with Gobert, Bam and Thompson, then 2k doesnt understand how basketball works. Detroit now look to be one of the best teams in the league providing their team leader Kyrie Irving has not fallen off the edge of the earth.

Summary: Think big Jesus Christ

B+

Golden State

Cameron Payne
Nick Richards
Shaquille Harrison (re-sign)
2nd round pick
1st round pick swap

Golden State were quiet on Free Agency day. They ate at the table, used exceptional manners but traded away most of their gms, meaning their impact was minimal. They retained Shaq (Harrison) and bolstered the PG spot with a good pick up in Payne.

Summary: Im just here to bid GMs and drink beers. And Im all out of GMs. George W. Bush

C+

Houston

Davis Bertans (re-sign)
Juan Hernangomez (re-sign)
Dequan Jeffries
Isaiah Hartenstein (via trade)
Jontay Porter (re-sign)

A well-written article by GM Vitticus outlined the Jerami Grant/ salary cap situation for the Rockets so I wont dive into that. Lets just say their position to not re-sign Grant makes sense and as a GM looking to contend, I thank Vitty for not sending him to Portland or Chicago. Outside of Grant, Houston were quite active. They re-signed their shooters and all their key pieces, while maintaining flexibility in the cap. Fans might be disappointed that there is no marquee signing but the front office will be able to continue to move forward and pocket millions.

Summary: I did it myyyyyy waaayyyyyyyy- Frank Sinatra

B-

Indiana

Malik Beasley (re-sign)
Torrey Craig (re-sign)
Zeke Nnaji

Indiana re-signed Beasley which was always a priority. Torrey Craig could be a rotation player and his contract is team friendly to boot. They have one of the most exciting looking 2k rosters on paper with athleticism coming out both ends. If they can stay healthy, the Pacers will be a headache and Beasley should add to their offensive prowess if he ever gets to touch the ball.

Summary: We got shooters! Hassaan Whiteside

B+

LA Clippers

Alec Burkes
Jerome Robinson

Clippers have so much cap room, roster space and established talent, yet they did very little in the Free Agency. They renounced half a roster in the lead up to the big day but couldnt land a big fish. Does it matter? Not really, they have Giannis and talent surrounding him. You cant help but feel the Clips will do something around week 5.. What are they up to?

Alec Burkes is a sneaky pick-up for this team and at this point in time, he is sneakily putting up 20 points per game in New York in the NBA. Could he be one of the steals of the Free Agency?

B

LA Lakers

CJ Ellenby

Wheres PJ? A phrase echoed around the league for the past month. Free Agency Day was no different. It looks like this proud franchise is looking to the future, sans Westbrook, meaning a marquee signing isnt what the doctor ordered. They let Marcus Morris walk but signed CJ Ellenby.

Summary: The bird is drinking the water! -Homer Simpson

B-

Memphis

DeMarcus Cousins
Derrick Favors (re-signed)
Aaron Baynes (re-signed)
Meyers Leonard (re-signed)
Kris Dunne
Tre Jones

A retrospective near MVP performance for Memphis GM Rootsey. The Grizz managed to re-sign a stable of big men including Favors, Baynes and Leonard (of the Meyers variety).

After the dust settled a red-lit transaction meant the Grizzlys bid for 2k stud Boogie Cousins was successful. Boogie looks like a perfect fit next to JJJ, he can do the inside work while Jackson Jr sits on the arc. Rootseys team looks ready to flick the switch this season as their young guns look poised to breakout. Week 5 might see this team balance out the roster as one of their bigs may become available.

Summary: Dont blame it on the sunshine, dont blame it on the moonlight, dont blame it on the good times, blame it on the Boogie -Michael Jackson

A+

Miami

Danilo Gallinari (via trade)
Thon Maker (re-sign)
Bobby Portis

Pistol, the architect of the bidding system and self-confessed nerd understood exactly what he was getting into this FA day. He had a couple of guys to retain in order to make a sign and trade.

The heat sent Millsap and Payton packing after re-signing them, to bring back a stretch four offensive stud in Danilo Gallinari. With Simmons running the offense, Pistol has managed to surround him with shooters and youth to compete now and in the long term. His free agency was simple yet effective as he bolstered the PF position.

Summary:  Just what the doctor ordered Mahatma Ghandi

B+

Milwaukee

Dwayne Dedmon (re-signed)
Robert Woodard II

Nothing special here for the Bucks. Theyre going into 2020-21 season looking to wait it out as their young stars develop. They retain Dedmon with a minimal bid and signed Robert Woodard II.

Summary: To the most patient bee goes the most beautiful flower. -Rosie ODonald

C

Minnesota

Harry Giles

Troy Brown Jr (via trade)
Jordan Clarkson (re-sign)
Immanuel Quickley (via trade)

Javonte Green (via trade)

Minny used his large cap space to re-sign Jordan Clarkson and make a successful bid on Harry Giles. GM Ethan was also active on the trade front, securing the services of young trio Troy Brown Jr, Immanuel Quickley (who broke out a day after signing) and Javonte Green. Nothing amazing here but the Wolves made the right moves to keep adding to their build while giving up very little.

Summary: Drive slow homie, you never know homie, might meet some hoes homie. You need to pump your brakes and drive slow homie.- Kanye

B+

New Orleans

Trey Burke

Maurice Harkless
Raul Neto (re-sign)

New Orleans had finished their roster prior to FA day, the only glaring area for addition was the possibility of adding one more 3 and D wing. Harkless would prove to be the perfect fit. While they wait for the return of Ja Morant, Mitchell will do the heavy lifting while Burke and Neto should serve as useful backups.

Summary: The odds of hitting your target go up dramatically when you aim for it. -American Sniper

B

New York

Brandon Ingram (re-sign)
Justin Holiday
Mason Plumlee

Reggie Bullock
Facundo Campazzo
DeAnthony Melton
Drew Eubanks
Garrett Temple

New York were savvy on FA day, re-signing restricted FA Brandon Ingram and bringing in talented support cast members in Mason Plumlee and Justin Holiday. Holiday could be a sneaky addition, hes long and plays both ends and could see additional minutes this season in the NBA. New York look a vastly improved team on last season and they used free agency to continue to get better.

Summary: Well, we are going to light firecrackers -Jacky Moon

B+

Oklahoma City

Christian Wood (via trade)

Evan Fournier (via trade)
Bismack Biyombo
Kent Bazemore
Dwayne Bacon (Klemms boy)

Wizkid has been busy this offseason. He was a key player in the draft using a multitude of lottery and first round picks, including the all-important number 1 pick. Perhaps the talent secured at the draft made the moves easier to pull off as the Thunder parted ways with Gordon Hayward to bring in another talented young big in Christian Wood and useful rotation piece Evan Fournier. Bismack Biyombo was another underrated signing as the rim protector will be a prefect back-up to the offensive duo Aldridge and Randle. It would seem more trades will be coming for the Thunder which will likely display a clearer picture as to whether theyre rebuilding or contending. A terrific offseason so far.

Summary: Dont worry about getting perfect, just keep getting better. -Michael Jordan

A

Orlando

Marcus Morris
Josh Jackson (re-sign)
Alex Len

GM GC had a busy offseason re-signing young core players in Steven Adams and Markelle Fultz. Morale was soaring heading into Free Agency which would only be short lasted after news of breakout star Markelle Fultz suffering a knee injury. This didnt stop GC from adding to the core, splashing out on his boieee Josh Jackson who appears to be breaking out in Detroit in the early season. The Magic also landed handy defensive pieces in Marcus Morris and Alex Len. They have set their sights on playoffs regardless of injuries and made positive strides on FA day.

Summary: Sometimes you gotta go backwards to go forwards. -Donald Trump

B

Philadelphia

Joe Harris (re-sign)
2nd round pick (Los Angeles)

Udoko Azubuike
Jahmius Ramsey
Deividas Sirvydis

Philly were capped but had bird rights on Joe Harris who is shooting the lights out in Brooklyn this season. GM Bens objective was pretty clear, re-sign Joe and try to find a gem that no one bid on (because of his 300 badges). Well, Philly got their guy and they signed three guys I dont know. Ben always does this and they turn into something, so Im going to wait and see how it plays out. Philly also brought in a second rounder which will likely turn into another hidden gem. Thats all they needed to do really.

Summary: One time youll realise you lost a diamond while too busy collecting stones. -Gilbert Arenas (doesnt really apply here)
