NSL Insider - Team by Team: Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics 2019/20: 30 Wins 52 Losses

Lets just get it out the way early, i hate what the celtics did last season.
They went in with a full youth start from the bottom sort of mindset in the intiall draft which is a perfectlly fine way to start a franchise. But then anytime the team started to win a few games, there was a few weird line ups and minutes distributions on game day. And anytime a young player played well he was shipped off for more picks in the draft, which is essiently just like winning tattslotto, only to spend the winnings on more tattslotto tickets.

Toby loves the draft, thats what gets him out of bed in the morning. But the hard part is done, he has a young superstar on the books, so the time to win is now.

But thats just my take on it all of course, the 2021 draft is meant to be absolutley stacked. So this write up might not age well if the Celtics turn out to be a genuine power house in the next couple of years.

Its gonna be a long season though and  i dont think the celtics will win many games at all. If i had to guess i would say they top out at 17 wins, and that might be pushing it even.

Best Player: Jason Tatum

He's a Star
This is tatums team and thats been clear from the get go. Just signed a massive extension so hes locked up for years to come. In saying that though the drop off from tatum to the rest of the roster is enormous, i reckon i could get a 10 day contract with the NSL celtics at the moment.
Hes going to put up some massive counting stats this season coming and would have to be one of the front runners for the NSL MVP, even though his team wont be winning much. Just give the man the ball and get out the way.

Sleeper Candidate: Cole Anthony

Great pick from Toby on draft day and i think he could be really good in real life and on 2k. I'm also super low on Garland so i could see him start at point guard for all 82 games for the celtics next season as well. Could end up as the celtics clear 2nd best player by the end of the year.
Anthony averaged 18.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game as a true freshman. That was after being the No. 1 point guard recruit in the country. Aside from inefficiencies that could be expected from playing for a bad team, Anthony basically was as advertised and the fact that he slid in both the nba and nsl drafts could be a blessing in disguise.

Major Trade:

The Boston Celtics send John Collins and Keita Bates-Diop to the New Orleans Pelicans.
The New Orleans Pelicans send Sekou Doumbouya and Grant Williams to the Boston Celtics.
The New Orleans Pelicans send a 1st-Rounder (Bkn) and 1st-Rounder (Pho) to the Boston Celtics.

John Collins is a really good young player, anyone can see that. Also sounds exaclty like the type of player the celtics need more of, so it begs the question why on earth he was shipped out? Draft picks, thats why. Maybe he might hit on one of them and draft a player as good a Collins, but theres also a strong chance he doesnt.

Draft Recap

Pick 6: Deni Avdija. Like this pick from Toby after he missed out on his top 2 guys, think Deni could be a great swingman in the NBA
Pick 7: Obi Toppin. Dislike this pick. Major Supercool Beas vibes from Toppin, would have liked to see Devin Vassell with this pick.
Pick 16: Cole Anthony Great pick, could end up as one of the best players from the draft
Pick 26: Tyrell Terry  a guy i know Toby was really high on, but i dont know much about. so another great pick from him to get his guy at 26
Pick 46: Nico Mannion Dont think this guy is an nba player at all, Isiah joe would have been nice here.
Pick 56: Devon Dotson another guy i dont know much about, but he got a 2 way contract in the nba so you cant complain at all.

Free Agency:
The celtics have a mountain of cap space to use so i would love to see them put some of that to use and grab a guy that they can flip for assets down the track. And i think that guy has to be Danilo Gallinari. If they can grab the rooster in free agency i would give the offseason 2 thumbs up and feel like the celtics were building something positive.

What about the future?
Well we are years away from seeing the results from Toby razing his village to the ground. If he nails the next couple of drafts though and ends up with someone like Cade Cunningham or Jalen Green next draft as well as Emoni Bates or Victor Wembanyama in 2022 then the celtics will be absolutley stacked and ill have to delete this write up.
They could also pivot from the current plan and use some of these draft picks to trade for a second star, which is what im hoping happens. Cause i think everyone wants to see Tatum in the playoffs sooner rather than later.

So even though i might be a touch on the negative side, Toby does love the celtics and im sure he will turn them into something special and prove me wrong.
