Back from an eventful break
Spurs GM Nelson recently returned to the office after a much deserved break only to find a ton of outstanding paperwork, trade offers and big fines/ 'please explains' from the league.
A transaction disaster was the topic of hot debate over the Christmas break as the wonderful admin team of the NSL worked tirelessly to resolve the situation. Without delving too much into the situation, the Spurs accidentally waived a star player in a clear mishap which resulted in a nervous wait for his rights to be returned to the roster. It seemed a no brainer to most parties in the league so some saw it as an opportunity to take advantage of as they on-looked in hope. Order was restored and the Spurs were relieved that empathy/ common sense prevailed. GM Nelson put out a statement following the embarrassing mishap, 'We sincerely apologise for the situation that arose after the waiver wire on Christmas incident. Obviously we never intended to release a player of this caliber and one of our team leaders. We clearly need to be better in the future and ensure we are thorough when making moves of any nature. If some GMs have their nose put out of joint, it was never our intention to have this occur and you can mark it down to GM'ing at the wrong hours of the night while trying to settle the kids back to bed. Clearly not a good idea. Sorry and thank you to all parties who sacrificed their time at such an important part of the year. We endeavour to pay back the league with years of good service, hard work and empathy.'
The lesson to come out of all of this, make sure you cross the t's and dot the i's whenever making a move.
The Spurs look to put the Christmas disaster behind them and build the roster as the trade deadline looms. The priority will be to see if another big man can be brought into the rotation via trade, though it appears the trade assets are drying up and a recent acquisition may need to be shopped. GM Nelson likes the look of the team on paper but is yet to see what the team functions like when all members are healthy. The big question is whether the Spurs at full strength, have enough to defend the title again this year as Portland, Charlotte and Toronto continue to strengthen their case as the no.1 seed at this point of the season.
All eyes point to week 9 to see if the run of form can continue in a covid depleted league and hopefully the league can start seeing some stars return over the coming weeks for the fans to renew their excitement about this year's title race.
