Hornets narrowly miss playoffs
In what would've been a Steven Bradbury finish for the young Hornets, a late push from the young squad failed to quite get over the line, finishing 9th (or 10th depending on whether Orlando win their last game or not) in the East, missing the playoffs of the very first NSL season by a ball hair.
"The first 7 weeks of the year were rough. We had become established as one of the bottom teams and we had just begun to accept our fate and put on our proverbial tank helmets. But a 5-game win streak in week 8 put those helmets aside." Said GM Barnshaw in the Charlotte/Clippers post-game presser.
"I gotta say at first i was mildly annoyed at the 5 game win streak, as i firmly believe that the "middle of the pack" range of the standings has the least forward momentum in terms of team cycle, and our team is too young to have the right tendencies to go all the way, so it more felt like a detriment to our chances at a top pick, but it was heart warming to see glimpses into future success. We got to see how the team gels."
That 5-game win streak was a glimpse into a near future though, as Charlotte continued to notch a decent amount of wins on the board, even taking the scalps of some top teams here and there. It was a mixed bag, but there was more consistency, and by week 16 they were sitting 8th in the East all of a sudden.
"Once we were in the playoff picture and our guys started coming back from injury, that's when things got interesting, " Said GM Barnshaw, "There was a fire that lit under the boys, we had a renewed sense of purpose. That's when you can't help but start having fantasies of a Cinderella story, the young team build that knocks off the #1 seed."
But Cinderella was stood up at the last minute.
The glass slipper will have to be found in 2k21.
