Philly Frills: 6/02/2024
A few days
after the Smart deal finalised, we find ourselves back here again to discuss
another trade completed by Philadelphia, all be it a small time move. Today the
76ers welcomed back into the fold Udoka Azubuike a couple of years after he was
moved out to Memphis for Matisse Thybule.
Dokes prospect
has dipped since he was last in Philadelphia. He was brought in for a pick swap
deal, as depth at the big man slot, with his size and athleticism making him
appear to be the perfect NSL big man. They werent wrong, as he averaged 8
points and 8 rebounds in 24 minutes as a rookie with 2 blocks per game and a
steal. This drew the attention of the Grizzlies who at that time were in big
man flux, and so a deal was done.
He survived
2 years in Memphis but due to the team opting to decline his team option and
make him an unrestricted free agent, the tenure ended last year after serving
as the teams reserve C where he averaged 4 points and 7 rebounds with a block
off the bench in 71 games. He became a 2way player, and the Grizz had no way to
guarantee he was to come back so on he went to Phoenix.
This year,
hes played sparingly as a 2way, which is often the case as you would expect.
As a 2way, hes a good depth piece to have around with his sheer size and
athleticism still putting him up there with some of the most unique big men in
the league and able to be tossed into roles when required with our league
engine. In 16 games hes averaged 3 points, 5 rebounds and a block in 14
minutes.
In Philly,
he replaces 2way signee Nathan Mensah whom never took the court with them. His
role will be minimal while the team is healthy, but he might yet see some
action while DayRon Sharpe is out, and and/or if Omer Yurtseven misses any
time. Hes probably extra, but why not ride and see where he goes I his second
stint in Philly.
Good luck
Nathan in Phoenix, and welcome back Udoka!
