A Smart Move?
Philly Frills: 2/02/2024
Happy New
Year Philly fans! Yes, its been that long since you have heard directly from
the 76er source. Hopefully your year has started well.
News broke
this morning that the 76ers had made a move on the roster that could be
considered significant as they farewelled three 76ers and welcomed three new
76ers in a move to upgrade and bolster the backcourt utilising their Pelicans
2024 1st round pick. The 76ers waved goodbye to their big man
acquired before free agency, Jericho Sims. Their injured point guard, Gabe
Vincent. And their versatile young swingman and unrestricted free agent, Talen
Horton-Tucker. None of these players had made any significant contribution to
what is a winning season this year in Philly. Sims started week 1 while the
team was injured, but fell from the rotation as the team got healthy, instead
the team utilising free agent pick up, Usman Garuba. Gabe never suited up this
year due to injury and THT also had fallen from the rotation once the team got
healthy and hit their stride, as Peyton Watson rose. He did start the other
week in the wake of a Brogdon missed week, but otherwise, all of these guys
werent getting regular court time in a winning healthy team.
So, who was
brought in? Welcome to the Philadelphia 76ers, Marcus Smart!
Smart has
been the type of player that the 76ers have long had their eye on through the
years of defensive minded teams with Adams, Draymond, Thybulle and co all known
for this, however theyd never been able to acquire the enigmatic guard.
Finally, they have landed their guy. Smart brings a toughness and grit to a
team that has transformed into a free running paint beast and it will be very
much welcomed. He can start next to the less defensive minded DeAaron Fox, or
play either guard position off the bench. He brings strength of options to a
team that was already running deep, but maybe just got a little bit better.
Smart too is
currently injured, but the beauty of this trade is that it does not matter.
None of their regular rotation was included in the trade, so having Smart work
his way back from injury wont change a thing for the team as they continue to
strive for wins. And when he returns, they then can choose how to utilise him best
while also making sure theyre well protected in the event that Russell
Westbrook departs at the end of the year.
The 76ers
also picked up 3rd year guard and shooter, Chris Duarte, and rookie
19 year old swingman prospect, Rayan Rupert, neither of which are necessarily
in the teams plans or rotation.
Welcome
Marcus and we look forward to seeing you on the court soon!
