Excitement in Philly!
Philly Frills: 22/12/2023
Dont look
now, but the 76ers are sitting a very clear 3rd in the East and are on
a win streak second only to the undefeated Milwaukee Bucks, with 8 wins in a
row! Yes, theyre now 15-6 and everything is clicking.
Philly fans
could have been forgiven for being worried, but happy that they still owned
their 2024 1st round pick after week 1. They went 0-4. They were all
blow outs. The team didnt click at all and they looked lost. Of course, a lot
of that could have been taken with a grain of salt with DeAaron Fox, Malcolm
Brogdon and Precious Achiuwa, all projected starters, out injured. But that didnt
stop the jokes and comments and concerns sneaking in. Other GMs were already
starting to circle the contending team that might just throw that towel in
and start paying out contributors. And then week 2 happened
The now fully
fit (Lets just forget Steven Adams exists this year) Philadelphia outfit flipped
the coaching books, the play styles, the tenacity and rolled out 4 different
starters to week 1 including the 3 now healthy inclusions, and just as a PM
came in during their game with Utah, to see about goals, it all came together
unexpectedly and they notched their first win of the season.
From there,
the fortunes have completely changed. They would go on to go 5-0 that week
including wins against Utah, Toronto and Memphis. The streak would hit 6 before
they got stopped short by none other than Portland who flipped the script from
a 9 point Philly lead with 6mins to play, to win by 8. They would suffer a 2nd
loss in week 3 to a rampaging Phoenix who shot it 61%, 43% from deep on 30
attempts and 88% from the line, putting up 144 points, but the ship stayed
afloat and theyre now 15-6, on an 8 game win streak and 15-2 since the return
of Fox and co.
Speaking of
Fox, it starts and ends with this man you would imagine. In 17 games this season,
hes lead the scoring for the 76ers 16 times with the only aberration being a
24 point outing that was topped by a Westbrook 30 in a Miami blow out. In week
5 alone he has averaged 47 points per game as he puts his team on his back each
night and lights up the scoring column. No one has fully slowed him yet.
It also
cannot be understated how much of an impact their 3rd year Center
has had moving into the starting line up sans Adams and a week 1 Yurtseven
experiment. DayRon Sharpe has been a work horse for them averaging 7 points,
14 rebounds, 3 assists a steal and a block through 17 starts. Without this impact
and competitiveness, the team that was struck the mightiest of blows losing
their anchor man down low before the season even began, they would not be
having the success they are currently enjoying.
So Philly
fans, while no lids are coming off, finally get out there and be excited for
what this team is doing and how they are doing it and enjoy the ride while it
lasts as we all know, it can go away in a blink.
Go 76ers!
