NSL Insider - Team by team: Washington Wizards

by gc6, updated on Thursday, November 07 2019, 12:43 am EST

GM Joshua and the curious case of the Washington Wizards has a great ring to it, so lets go for that as the title. It also is extremely relevant, as the wizards have flipped and flopped around as much as anyone since the draft started. But i think its safe to say they finally have settled on a direction.

The Wizards first round pick and franchise player was non other than young gun and 70 points in one game player Devin Booker. Another GM that went the youth route to start off their NSL Journey. Some or maybe everyone thought it may have been a reach at the time when he
was taken at pick 15 with some superstars still on the board in the form of Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard and Russell Westbrook and of course Jayson "Bean" Tatum.
It was an unbelievable risk to take and are we sure he is going to live up to expectations?

People have been calling Booker a future superstar since his rookie year. He signed a five-year, $158 million contract in July, he has the charisma of a natural celebrity, and players like Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James have all expressed admiration along the way. But the Suns continued to lose, untill this season.
Is the addition of some actual NBA players and an actual point guard turning the tide for him and the NBA suns, cause they look great at the moment.

He puts up numbers that leave him looking something like a young James Harden 26.5 ppg, 6.7 apg, 4.2 rpg, 46.5 FG%, 32% from three in the NBA. But  will he ever be good enough to carry this Washington Wizards team to 50 regular season wins or maybe even to an NSL Championship being the big dog? or maybe he is going to get that fabled 90 rating that josh has been nagging us about after every bucket?
I guess we will have to wait and see!

The Wizards have also been busy at the trade table during the off season, with a couple of big names coming and going from DC.

The first and probably the biggest one was the dealing of All Star big man Nikola Vucevic for what amounts to a couple of first rounders and a handful of seconds.

The whole deal is as follows, out: Nikola Vucevic
In: JR Smith, Nerlens Noel, 2019 pick 13 (Brandon Clarke), Raptors 2020 1st round pick and a philly 2020 second rounder.

Nerlens Noel has since been on traded for 2 future second round picks and 5 Gm Points.

So that leaves us with a final tally of Brandon Clarke a most likely late 1st rounder if the raptors are as good as their roster suggest, 3 second rounders and 5 gm points for the big boy Vooch.

Brandon Clarke has certainly had a decent start to his career in the NBA with current averages of 10 points and 6 rebounds through his first few games and he definatley passes the eye test, but we will have to wait a couple of years before we can really pick a winner or loser from this deal.
But that's no fun and we need some hot takes now, so ill leave that up to the punters at home to make up their mind on this one for the time being.

Another big trade for the wizards was the acquisition of Jusuf Nurkic or the big bad bosnian bear as he likes to be called. Also maybe another controversial deal at the time.

In for the Wizards: The Drug  Addict Tyreke Evans, Yogi Ferrell and of course Jusuf Nurkic
Out: Marc Gasol, Jakob Poeltl and the Wizards 2021 1st round pick.

On face value this looks like an awful deal for the Wiz, but maybe there is some method to GM Joshua's madness. Gasol is absolutely washed in the NBA (even though he can still ball in 2k land) and had a disgusting contract for this year, so just getting off that money was probably a good thing. Jakob Poeltl is still young but he really hasn't shown much up to this point in time in his career, maybe he turns into something but i doubt it. The future 1st puts a lot of pressure on josh to be good in a couple of seasons or else he will be handing over a really juicy pick, but ill back him in to get the Wizards humming by then.

Yea it sucks the Nurkic has a broken leg and a lot of this deal hinges on how well he comes back from that, because Tyreke Evans is obviously done and is Yogi Ferrell even still in the NBA?

But the Wiz have a really nice starting 5 going forward if it all goes right for them and everything happens as expected.

Best Available Starting 5

Centre: Jusuf Nurkic

Power Forward : Brandon Clarke

Small Forward: Taurean Prince

Shooting Guard : Devin Booker

Point Guard : Lonzo Ball

Just a nice bit of everything is that line up and with a bit of coaching magic from Josh and some natural growth from a few of his younger players and he could be straight in to the playoffs after the down season he is going to have this year.

Zach Collins looks like the best of the rest (even though he is injured at the moment as well lol) and could be a super 6th man.
i don't think we  should expect 20 points a night from the  big man, but all you hoping for him to be a more consistent threat on that side of the ball. His rim protection is already pretty good and you can tell he prides himself on that facet of the game, its easy to get excited about him but we would love to see more than just some flashes of great play from the big man this season, once he comes back from injury that is.

But if there is anything we can expect from the wizards this year is some more trading and i have it on good authority that his office is always open!
