NSL Insider - Team by Team: Denver Nuggetsby laddas, updated on Monday, October 25 2021, 12:06 am EST Denver Nuggets Team Review 2020-21 Finish: 49-33 Season Highlight: Steph Curry and despite missing their second best player all season, a 6th place finish in the bloodbath West is a highlight. Chef was absolutely breath taking. Take a deep breath before reading these record breaking numbers… 47.8ppg 8.7apg 4.4rpg 2.0spg… another deep breath… 62% shooting from the field… 57%!! From the 3 and 98% from the free throw line all in a matter of 37.8mpg a night(though some will say he played 40+ minutes all season) on his way to the MVP trophy. Will anyone come close to being this dominant at that level of efficiency, I don’t think so. Curry was the Nuggets all season long, he was that good. Season Lowlight: Missing Curry’s splash brother, Klay Thompson, all season. After tearing his ACL 2 years ago, Klay was ramping up for a big 2020/2021 season… But an awkward stumble in a scrimmage match saw him fall to the floor clutching his Calf/Achilles area… Scans showed the worst possible news, a complete Achilles rupture. Devastating news. Delaying seeing him on the court with Steph and MPJ another year. Lets all hope he comes back on schedule this season and we can see what this trio is capable of. Best Trade: The Cleveland Cavaliers send Doug McDermott to the Denver Nuggets. The Denver Nuggets send a 2nd-Rounder (Den) to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Denver Nuggets use their trade exception over $ 7,333,333. Digga doesn’t make a whole lot of trades so this was just the first player I seen that counted as a win. McBuckets is a solid player and a good shooter, which fit the Denver mould perfectly. He had a solid season averaging 10.4ppg 3.7rpg and 3.4apg while shooting 52% from 3, something that is a must in Denver. Solid pickup here for the Nuggies. Worst Trade: The Denver Nuggets send Immanuel Quickley to the Minnesota Timberwolves. I’m sure the Nuggets got something back but I really can’t remember what it was. IQ quickly established himself as a microwave scorer, an almost necessity off the bench these days and something the Nuggets could’ve really used. Other Notable Trades: N/A Digga is normally pretty quiet in the trade market and this season was no different. Rumours were he was close to pulling the trigger on moving Klay a couple of times but decided to hold. Free Agency: Gary Trent Jr – RFA George Hill – UFA Willy Hernangomez – UFA GTJ will return, being a RFA, unless Digga wants nothing to do with him will be an automatic return. He will continue to hold down the 2 spot until Klay is cleared to return. Hill and Willy will probably both leave. Hill could stick around in a backup role as he is a solid veteran but Willy I can’t see being chased after to return. Star: Stephen Curry An absolute no brainer here. Steph was un-f**king-believable. When you consider he was responsible for over 60ppg a night on AVERAGE, I mean that is just absurd. I won’t repeat his numbers as they were the highlight on the season already but with the amount impact he produced in his 37 minutes a night is staggering. The 2020/21 season he put together I don’t ever see being matched. The chef was cooking every night for every minute. Flop: Michael Porter Jr. Its harsh I know, but MPJ frustrates the hell out of me. He’s got it all, size, skill, smooth and a decent athlete, but he just seems to lack that next level assertiveness. With Klay being out, I would’ve loved to have seen him take that next step into stardom, unfortunately it didn’t happen. While the city of Denver were screaming out for a robin, they got more like an Alfred, albeit a great character but does all the work at home behind the scenes. MPJ will never be an all-nsl defense guy but I’d really like to see him jump into the 24ppg category and really assert himself on the game. Can it happen in the 2021/22 season? I hope so, or Chef will need to average near on 50ppg again. Draft Grades: Pick 12: Jalen Johnson A A big reach at 12 compared to his NBA draft position, but worth it imo. This kid has a smooth all round game and can impact multiple areas with his scoring, nifty post up game, developing jump shot and eye for a pass. Won’t be a huge contributor this season or possibly next, but his future is bright and there’s nothing wrong picking him in the lottery. Good pick for Digga here. Pick 20: Keon Johnson B The verdict will be out on Keon for a while I think. While an incredible athlete, his skill level is average at best. Does project well to at least be a good defender based on his incredible athleticism and ability to move. Will be an interesting guy to watch over the next few years. Pick 21: NahShon Hyland B+ Bones!!! Absolutely love this kid. Wanted him real bad at my mid 20’s pick but Digga nailed it taking him 6 or so picks higher than his NBA spot. Good athlete, natural knack for putting the ball in the bucket and can make the right pass when necessary. Projects to be a good playmaking/scoring combo guard. Pick 37: Neemias Queta C Don't know much about Queta but Digga has a good eye for talent so you'll take his "eye" on this one. Pick 38: Ayo Dosunmu B- Great value pick at 38 here. Ayo is all heart and effort and has a decent skillset to grow into a contributing NSL player too. Has a few things to work on, but has a good foundation to work with. Another solid pickup for Digga. The Future: Get Klay healthy and lets see what this team can do. They did trade Turner off in the offseason and I'm not exactly sure what the full deal was, but surely he wasn't given away. Curry, Klay and MPJ could take this team fairly deep as there is so much offense and shooting there its a hard contain. Jalen, NahShon and hopefully Keon can develop into good players that can serve this team well going forward. They carry some good role players going into the next season as well with Trent Jr. Dwight Powell, Pat Connaughton and Taurean Prince. Interested to see what they can add at free agent time as well. Their books are stocked to the max but i can see a few vets wanting in on the project here in Colorado. I'm looking for the Nuggets to finish similar but only cause Klay will miss the first half of the season, come playoff time, pending their health, they could be a real dark horse. C: Dwight Powell/Willy Hernangomez (UFA) PF: Michael Porter Jr. SF: Taurean Prince/Jalen Johnson SG: Klay Thompson/Gary Trent Jr. (RFA)/Keon Johnson/Pat Connaughton/ PG: Stephen Curry/George Hill (UFA)/Ayo Dosunmu |
