NSL Insider - Free Agency Big Namesby Nenjabin, updated on Wednesday, October 13 2021, 12:55 am EST Big Names, Big Bids: 13/10/2021 Every year we get to this time and we are
right on that verge of the Free Agency period and knocking on the door of the
season start! Our system here has shown already that there is much more
opportunity for teams to take a hard look at someone elses guy and in some
cases its straight up impossible for the rights owning team to keep their guy
whether it be for loyalty reasons or salary reasons. This year is no exception,
and Im going to take a look at some of the more interesting free agents of
this class. You cant start an article like this and not
real off the biggest name on the market bar none. Kawhi is a really interesting
one this year because its not just as simple as best player going to help
someone big next yearbecause he isnt. Hes likely out the year (though
reports suggest he could be back for playoffs) and it leaves the big time
dilemma in Portland. You have to retain your guy, no matter the injury, but it
stings paying $40mil next year for a towel waver, and theres a handful of
teams out there with cap space that are in that rebuild window that would
probably see an injury year to the biggest fish as an even more perfect fit for
them. So, were going to see Portland put down the cash to force a return. Its
a necessity. Fresh off being the spark that sent the
Pistons all the way to the Finals, Kyle has suggested he wants a sign and trade
so the Pistons have no way to actually retain their guy, just the head start in
signing him to send off for something back. The cash is big, and contenders
will be circling looking for that trade. The Pistons will put the cash down to
make sure theyre getting a return. Man Paul a year ago was adamant he was going
to pick up his PO! But here we are, with a rebuilt rep, and he earned himself a
re-up to the tune of $30mil a season. Its a tough-ish pill to swallow being
the Hornets who may have been more willing to have him on $43mil for a year and
then off the booksbut you have to bring the talent back into the fold now.
Luckily, the deal is only guaranteed for 2 years, so you have the out and a lot
less risk to carry. The bid will be made to keep him. He took until the last minute to opt in to his
PO last year which left the then 76ers hanging on whether they could even trade
for him. He lasted only half a year and now Phoenix whom were ready to ante up
to keep him long term, are being forced to ship the NSL HOFer via sign and
trade. The deal is already in place reportedly so the Suns will be making sure
of a return and there wont be any bidding shenanigans on this big name. The Hardaway trade a couple of years ago has
worked perfectly for the NBA Mavs, as Tim continued on his merry way as a
microwave scorer and shot maker and he earned a new deal. However, in the NSL
hes on one of the rebuild jobsthe mother of rebuild jobs, and maybe he just
isnt the direction that the new GM wants to take, laying out all that money
and GM on a guy of his age? Maybe theres some room here for some other wing
needy team to take a swing and see what the Lakers are going to really spend on
in free agency? Hardaway could end up being one of the big shows. Who would have thought Duncan would score this
sized deal a couple years ago? Not Spudhe jumped off the shooter as quick as
he could once he could remove those rights. Robinson has been renounced so he
becomes possibly the highest paid guy out there who will 100% be playing for a
new team. Hes Rights-less and its up to the guys with the spare cash to all
duke it out with their GM points and hoping on the random factor swing. Of
course, Duncan comes with the caveat of being the guy that could very well earn
$2mil per shot per game, too, so will the market be as ripe as it could be on
paper? Welcome Kelly to for now, being the first guy/biggest
name/biggest contracted guy to have rights owned but no resign or sign and
trade bonus. Yep, all the other guys who dont have the bonus have been
renounced already and the top end of the scale is going to be lucky swipes away
by outside teams if they take the chance. Oubre though, is almost entirely fair
game but Dallas obviously hopes their 1 year loyalty bonus pips them over the
edge to keep him next to KD. Whats the chances? Reggie becomes the first guy on this list that
cannot be retained by his current employer unless they make some serious salary
cutting moves by free agency day. The Spurs own only 1 bird year on Reggie
which entitles them to only 125% of the past years salary, but in the NBA the
Clippers had Early Bird rights to bring him back over the mid level exception
value. The writing is on the wall for Reggie and hes going to be a serviceable
commodity on free agent day with many teams happy to have a scoring guard with
some size fill that 6th man role at the least. Kemba Walker Kemba was meant to be locked up for a couple of
years on obscene cash, but he was dumped on OKC in the NBA who were happy to
eat his salary for two years and waived him, so he joins the UFA market here
with the Waived/Bought out and Signed FA bonus which is less than half that
of a resign or sign and trade bonus. On a deal that is now below the Full MLE
level, that makes Kemba a tantalising prospect to the contenders with some cap
room and means the Thunders hands are going to be tied in placing a big GM
point bid to retain their prized guard. Theres going to be some carnage here,
I can feel it. Dennis may not be the biggest fish in the sea,
but hes a really nice scoring guard here and everyone needs those. Hes also
now HEAVILY affordable due to his NBA misfortune in declining a massive payday
and landing only a Taxpayer MLE deal. This means that you can get a 15-20ppg
guard no matter who you are in this league. Everyone can afford him and he has
no resign bonus to speak of in Dallas so will be a hot commodity! JaVale McGee He may not be the biggest of names, but JaVale
has always been 2k gold down low and continues to be no exception to the be
big, be athletic, dominate 2k rule. Hes maybe a little more pricey than some
of the big men out there that will be on this list, but at $5mil hes still affordable
by just about everyone and big men still rule. No loyalty resign either, so hes
on the market! Boban Marjanovic Speaking of glitchy big men, theres nearly no
other like big Boban whos size is simply unstoppable. Hes slow like molasses but
2k doesnt seem to care. He anchors the middle where ever he plays and is on a
really friendly $3.5mil 2 year deal now. He did resign, so the inside track
remains with the 76ers, but they do have a known body logjam Hassan Whiteside Last years big finger to the 76ers is now
going to be a big finger to the Bulls. Hes yet again a minimum contract vet
but with BIG 2k upside as he anchored the Bulls all the way to the conference
finals. Being minimum though presents the same issues the 76ers had last year
in wanting to keep their starting Cthe Bulls cannot beat at least half the
leagues 99 point bid, if a 99 point big comes from elsewhere, and so are they
going to go for it and hope none does? Or wil they do what the 76ers did last
year and let the others fight it out and spend their points elsewhere? Is Hassan
still a 99 point guy? In 2k, I say yes. The champs big man down low is someone that
they would love to retain, but in the end it just does not make sense to try
and do so. Theyd have to retain his rights to get even that 1 loyalty point
bonus, but that means keeping the massive cap hold on the books and forfeiting
the Full MLE, and settling for a tax payer MLEwhich in turn means they have to
let Nerlens Noel walk. Do you let Noel walk for only a hit and hope chance at
winning a 99 point bid when you arent the front runner before the bid (and
thus could lose a 99 pointer like this writer did last year?). Nope. Dwight Howard These big time Cs on little time cash are
really the main draw this year. Dwight is again a minimum guy and again has no
loyalty bonus, so the Blazers are going to need to roll out a 99 point bid with
no assurances that they can win that bid being that they are entirely able to
be beaten by another 99 point bid! It's the chance you take, though, and one
that I believe the GM does take. Who wins the coin flip? Carmelo Anthony The last guy I want to talk about is the
Eastern Champs starting SF last year, the old guy, Carmelo. He signed elsewhere
this offseason in the NBA which means he was a little or no chance at staying
in Detroit and so was renounced early. Hes completely free game. No owning
team, all down to the bid of points competing for the services of an aging but
very effective forward. Whos going to win the Melo sweepstakes? Good luck to all in free agency, whatever you
choose to do! - NSL Insider News. |
