The Twenty-five Percenters
Week one has been placed on the shelf. It comes as no surprise that the Mavericks , as disheveled at full health let alone with any injuries set in place (and we mean ANY), did not show very well win/loss-wise. The silver lining comes with knowing they were in each game finishing the week at 1-3. The three losses gave the hopeful in Dallas reason to be just that, hopeful. The squad, minus key players, played impactfully in the losses. This gives the front office and especially general manager, LJ Maverick, reasons to believe in their future for the time being.
Led by the likes and veterans in Bobby Portis, Christian Wood and, surprisingly, Terence Davis, the team was defiant in the losses. And, the return of Myles Turner (this week) and Gordon Hayward (soon) should bolster the "few and far between" wins in this very competitive basketball league. Turner's freak athleticism alone should upgrade the interior defense at the very minimum. Hayward's leadership and scoring should be a noticeable upgrade as well. But, as in every year it seems for this organization, the season comes down to these unfortunate injuries due to never quite having depth at the bench. The rookies have looked decent this early season with Ousmane Dieng getting the most minutes and Mark Williams starting to look like a great defensive asset. But, don't look for either along with Nikola Jovic to make a serious impact.
The phone lines have quieted lately in Dallas, but that never means that LJ Maverick is not open to answering. His disdain for losing will always mean that no asset is untouchable if a trade looks to help that cause. The team will definitely be a player in any talks involving their best players for sure. And, except for this season, they do own the majority of their own picks as well.
