NSL Insider - TANK RANK VOL 1 by Nels, updated on Wednesday, March 24 2021, 01:49 pm EST Tank Rank While the teams at the top of the NSL often feature in the articles and league discussions, it is rare we investigate the long-term builders and just how well they're positioned. The league loves the high flyers and the teams at the top but who are the snakes in the grass and the next threats at building a contender?
Tank Rank investigates the teams best positioned for long-term success by using a formulated points system, calculating the value of each team's assets and quantifying each team's long-term position based on their score. The points system is simple and factors in value of picks and players. It factors I where these picks will likely fall and the ceiling of most rostered players worth noting. The values are as follows:
PICKS: Projected high lottery picks- 200 points Projected lottery picks- 150 points Late round picks- 100 points Early second round picks- 50 points Other second round picks- 20 points
PLAYERS: The most important asset on a roster is actual talent and while picks offer hope, they're not certain to be successful roster additions. Therefore, the value of actual talent is valued higher than picks, and is dependent on the author's view of age, potential, current value and projected ceiling. Player values are as follows:
Current Superstar (88 and above)- 500 points Future Superstar (80+ but with All-Star potential)- 400 points Potential Star (high 70s with great upside)- 250 points Long term starter- 150 points Good prospect/role player- 100 points Could go either way- 50 points
It's important to note that not every roster piece will be analysed. Only key personnel, picks and young assets will take the main focus in this article.
Let's investigate- TANK RANK.

Conclusions: It's interesting to compare the builds of each tank. Some accumulate points in assets while others earn a bulk load of points in their picks. The front runners have a stable of highly projected picks with at least one young star as the anchor to the build. Though these teams are the lowest ranked, it will be interesting to see how teams like Memphis, New Orleans and Miami rank against these teams when they're investigated in volume 2.
The clear standout using our points system is Boston who have accumulated a number of high-end picks and have some underrated young talent and a young star in Tatum. The other thing in their favour is almost ever rostered player is a young asset of sorts. Boston will be active in a number of drafts going forward and will likely look to flick out of tank-mode in 2022-23 range.
Milwaukee are not far off the pace and feature two young stars and an impressive portfolio of picks. The Bucks continue to hold some veteran contracts which could be used to bring in some more points via second round picks closer to the deadline.
Atlanta's portfolio of picks is as extensive as there is in the NSL. They have a number of picks that could hit later down the line, but were 'under valued' due to the GMs and teams they currently belong to. If disaster strikes for the teams they belong to, Altanta's portfolio will become even more impressive. They also have versatility in drafts meaning they can move up by packaging multiple assets. Watch out for them in the 21 draft.
Cleveland and Minny have been wise in using their cap to bring in additional assets and they both have a strong springboard to catch the leading tankers. They will need to hit in the lottery to find another star which will move them up these rankings.
Phoenix have almost all their assets in players, if a couple of them breakout, they could be a climbing team sooner rather than later.
Utah will be sellers and will likely move role players to find picks if they can pry them from contenders.
The Lakers have their own picks which is a BIG asset in itself. What can Murray be? Are there any other players on that roster that could be a long-term valuable asset?
TANK RANK LEADERBOARD: 1. Boston- 3310 2. Milwaukee- 2930 3. Atlanta- 2780 =4 Cleveland and Minnesota- 2650 5. Phoenix- 2450 6. Utah- 2350 7. Lakers- 2180
