Offseason?
Well it's been a busy start of the year for the Memphis Grizzlies we were predicted to have a extremely high luxury tax bill now that we're all the way up in the second apron and repeat offender over the lux so we had to start thinking, "how can we have our cake and eat it too?" Unfortunately having the cake and eat it too comes with having to make some sacrifices. Club favourites Tyler Herro and Mitchell Robinson were those sacrifices. Both players were in the long term plans for the Grizzlies until the lottery gods smiled on the team. When we landed the number one pick that we're very fortunate enough to come away with, trading down for three and sixand drafting Stephen Castle and Zach Edey provided us more flexibility. These two players look to fill the roles of Herro and Robinson at a lower cost base moving forward.
Due to last years tax bill we made some earlier decisions to cut Mason Plumlee and Lonnie Walker as we didn't see these players returning on affordable deals for our valuable GM points. To replace them we drafted Johnny Furphy and Antonio Reeves who both potentially getting full time contracts. We also have the rights to Luke Travers who has the potential to be getting a full term contract with the club as well as Scottie Pippen Jnr who while he's on a 2-way contract may get promoted at some time throughout the season. To fill out our big man depth chart we have the returning Sandro Mamukeshlavili who is another club favorite who was drafted 57th by the club a few years ago.
So the sacrifice was made with the plan to start taking somesome steps to reduce our overall long-term salary as we thought we may not be able to achieve a reduction immediately and may have to look at a next year target to get below the aprons. The difficult decision to trade Mitchell Robinson and Tyler Herro was made easier thanks to the easy dealings with GM Ethan in his new role in Milwaukee. Glad to be sending our stars East and getting quality players back in Davion Mitchell, Dennis Schroder and Myles Turner. While the salary didn't reduce much we did bring back expirings and felt those to be more tradeable deals as the season progresses.
The management, wanting to do what is best for the players, weren't happy hold back Davion Mitchell and Myles Turner in achieving their potential being stuck deep on the bench when Turner is a starter and Mitchell has something to prove in his final year. Myles Turner, while he's an excellent player and has a very high rating he duplicated a position that we already had locked in behind Bam Adebayo. We were approached pretty quickly by Philadelphia to move Turner for Bobi Klintman, who the front office were high on leading into the draft, and Marcus Smart, a Grizzlies player from a few years ago. Once the Turner trade was completed the Smart deal was not on the cards due to apron contraints so Nenjaben pivotted and produced a massive deal where he was to move Myles Turner for Draymond Green, and the Grizz would get the Tim Hardaway Jnr, who will find a position in our squad as a backup shooting guard, Bobi Klintman and draft assests. Again happy that the best players in the deals headed East, rather than having to face them 4 times a year.
Finally the Davion Mitchell trades came together quickly too, Mitchells contract was an awkward $6M and the front office preferred the roster space and saving 42gms than retain his services. A quick swap for Jalen McDaniels and his just slightly more TPE friendly deal allowed us to move him quickly to the Warriors.
So since flip the Grizz have saved 100 GMs in future fines, they have transitioned from -20 GM balance to 45 GM balance, added 4 rookie deals, a future 1st and a handful of 2nds. With roster spots few and far between we will probably make the decision to release Kyle Anderson to reduce our potential fines by a further 119 Gms. Savvy General Managers around the league are probably circling Dennis Schroder prior to an Olympic explosion, as German National Team Schroder will show what he can produce in a similar squad to his NBA Brooklyn Nets. Or perhaps they will turn their head to contract year Tim Hardaway Jnr who will be the much required shooting surrounding Cade Cunningham in Detroit. With the asking price only a reduction in current year salary and some 2nds/Gms it wont take long for these players to be picked up prior to a horrible and uninteresting Free Agency.
