Deckchairs on the Titanic
What a horrible start to the seasons for the Grizzlies. Were they surprised by a slow start in the first week? No, as it always seems to be the case when a new season sets in and the team needs to understand which way the wind is blowing in 2k.
Then GM Rootsey had a round of Covid to muddle the senses.
After that was all said and done, GM Rootsey had to start experimenting more (and unsuccessfully) with line up and rotation changes.
Finally week 7 rolls around and there is s glimmer of hope on the horizon for the team. The tweaked line up to have a superstar come of the bench with a "attack the basket" rookie looks like its paying some rewards, beating some undermanned West titans to at least a 2 win possibly 3 win week. In previous weeks the team wouldn't have looked like a chance even against the injured line ups it faced. The best part about the week was losing by 2 to the West leader and healthiest of the 4 opponents.
The reason it was the best part was because it displayed there was still more to do to get the team performing at a level that the fans expect of the Grizz. The team has been on the phones almost as soon as the first rumblings of superstars being traded this week. Whether it was Haliburton, KD or Curry, or even going back to Dejounte everything was considered. While dreams come and go, activity usually leads to trades. So a few days later and a 3 team trade is looking like it is coming to fruition shortly. It might end up being a matter of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic or it might be the right mix of role players to help support the stars to achieve what they should be doing.
One of the mooted targets in the trade is often injured Malcolm Brogdon. He isn't a name that sparks joy these days around the league but there is potential for him to have a Derrick White type impact in the starting line up. This lead to a change that the GM would have preferred to avoid, the farewell (again) of Mike Conley. A Grizzlies favourite for many years his second tour of duty will come to an end quicker than anticipated due to the crowded backcourt and cap negiotiations forcing the hand of the GM. Fortunately with rookie sensation Stephon Castle blossoming in a 6th man role and super cheap depth piece Scotty Pippen Jnr also taking a step up this season quicker than anticipated the team has the capacity to move around the edges. Conley's depature will confoundingly bring in another point guard in T.J. McConnell. T.J. has the capacity to cover the starting role if Brogdon enjoys his "veteran leadership" role more than his "getting minutes" role.
So that leaves a few question marks over who fills out the money from the Grizzlies side, and what else is balancing the trade. The mystery will be reveiled in a matter of days and everyone will be able to judge how much was paid to get a better view of the iceberg.
