Familiar territory
In 2020, the Warriors led by rookie GM Clay were able to sneak into the 7 seed in the West by playing near .500 basketball for the latter half of the season. That run has went down in Warriors' Lore as what could have been, as the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead to the Jimmy Butler lead Suns. It was heartbreak in Oakland, and it notoriously sent Clay to the Alps for secluded, meditation focused vacation.
In 2021, the Warriors find themselves in a very familiar situation, fighting for one of the last Play In spots in the West, and likely needing to win two play in games to ensure their post season lives. The prize? The 8 seed would get the honor of being blasted by the unstoppable Blazers, but the experience for the young guys on the squad would be invaluable.
"We've got guys who can play with anyone in Zach and DeAndre, but of course we're still building and not quite ready to compete on the larger stage." Titles told the media when asked about his teams chances in a potential Play In Tournament.
With that said, it has been expressed loudly that the Warriors brass, and the players for that matter, WANT to be in the Play In. The idea is that even if the Warriors make the playoffs, they still get the extra games, and lose at most 4 draft spots realistically. In another words, it's not make or break in regards to the Warriors owning their pick again.
Ideally, the Dubs would like to overtake Houston for the 7 seed, but Houston, the winners of 12 straight, won't be having any of it as time is running out. The Warriors have been without Ayton for two weeks now, in a pivotal stretch of the season, and are elated to have him back next week in what should be a huge injection into the arm of the playoff hopefuls.
