Eye on Lonzo
EYE ON LONZO
Top of the morning Wizards fans,
Today we are having a deep dive into one of our young extremely promising players, Lonzo Ball.
UCLA graduate , Lonzo, was selected 2nd in the 2017 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers after a one and done season with the Bruins.
After a slow start to his NBA career albeit from injuries stemming his growth or warts in his game that still needed to be ironed out Ball didn’t set the NBA scene on fire but instead slow flashes of one day he eventually could become.
Then Lonzo was traded from the Lakers to the New Orleans Pelicans which was deemed as a “fresh start” for Ball. Revamping his jump shot in the off season the NSL Wizards were happy to grab in the 3rd round of the inaugural NSL draft believing in his work ethic and potential and his hunger to improve. Lonzo started off the season in similar fashion as he played the last couple, flashes of greatness but ultimately not living up to expectations.
That is until the past incredible 5 games.
Lonzo’s averages over the past 5 games 21.6 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds on 57.1% from two point range, 46.7% from three point range (on 9 attempts per game) but still shooting a concerning 55.6% from the free throw line in that span. They are superstar numbers from the 22 year old and seem to stem from a new found aggressiveness to attack the defence off the dribble and confidence to let it fly from behind the arc.
Will he be able to keep this up? Probably not.
Does it matter? Not really.
The style of play that Ball is employing is the most exciting thing about this stretch of play as it shows he could be turning a corner mentally and that the game is slowing down for him as he figures how he can become as dominant as he was coming up through the junior ranks.
This just shows when Lonzo Ball puts it all together he is an unbelievable two force on the basketball court and that he has many years left to figure it out and when this becomes the norm watch out NSL.
