Duo of the future

Duo of the future: End of season rookie report

This season has been a roller coaster for Indiana this year, starting out high, then low, then high, then low, then high, then low. Now we are in the final week of the season and Indy is fighting tooth and nail for the 6th seed to avoid the play-in. But that’s not what this is about, this is about talking about Indiana’s two star rookies, their impact this season and the future outlook for these 2. Let’s get started.

Victor Wembemnyama: 7’3, 230lbs. 20 years old. Center.

Season averages: 26ppg, 13.8rpg, 3.2apg, 1.6spg, 5.3bpg with 56/43/87 splits.

Look above at those numbers. Did ya look? If you did, you’d probably think that this is a player in their prime, 27-30 years old, looking to be a face of the league and a top 10 player. Now most of that is correct, except for one part. Wemby isn’t in the middle of his prime, instead he’s finishing up his rookie season. That’s right, those numbers belong to a rookie. Wemby has been a monster this season, currently ranked as the 4th overall best player in the NSL and the top ranked Center, Wemby has been more than advertised. Wemby has already become the cornerstone franchise player that this Pacer organization has desperately needed and he’s delivered. Wemby is on pace to not only run away with the ROTY award, but also potentially the DPOTY award, while also making all-rookie AND all defensive first teams. Wemby’s future is so bright that the sun is dim in comparison. If his rookie year shows anything, then he will be the number 1 player soon enough, with more awards and multiple titles soon to be clogging his trophy shelf.

Scoot Henderson: 6’2, 196lbs. 20 years old. Point Guard.

Season Averages: 11.9ppg, 2.2rpg, 3.4apg, 0.4spg, 0.1bpg with 43/35/83 splits.

Scoot, Scooter, Scooty, Sctooster. Wemby went first in the NSL draft and Scoot went second. Knowing that, you would think Indy somehow had the first two overall picks in the draft. But they didn’t. At the midway point of the season, with injuries piling up and seemingly the light at the end of the tunnel dwindling away, GM Yeet decided to pull the trigger. In a massive deal trading away James Harden, one of the return players was Scoot Henderson. Scoot was getting less than 18mpg on a stacked Utah team, not getting a real chance to show his talent. Indy was definitely an improvement. Averaging 13/2.5/4 on 42/39/78 splits for Indy in 23.5mpg is a bigger improvement than some might think. The fact that he shot nearly 40% from three despite shooting less than 30% from 3 in Utah is a massive improvement. Scoot was especially awesome in the last couple weeks of the season, shooting around 46.5% from three over the last 2 months. Scoot ended the season seemingly finally getting his feet under him and finding his rhythm. If he is able to capitalize on that growth, then he could be looking at an All Star nod next season.

Wemby and Scoot went 1 and 2 in the NSL draft, and now could potentially be the number 1 and 2 options for Indy not only next season, but for many seasons to come. This is a young tandem with a strong team around them that just needs time to grow and develop, so don’t be surprised if this Indy squad is competing for titles year in and year out starting next season.
