Slow Start for Grizz

Two and a bit weeks in and its time to pump out a news article and reflect on the new season. 10 games in and four losses is where the Grizz sit at this point, and we are disappointed with the slow start. Too many seasons have gone by where we get edged out of the playoff race because of one or two wins and it always comes back to the slow start. So starting hot and getting the victories early gives you a leg up on the competition when fighting for those scarce play-off spots. Fortunately for us the play-in games give us a chance to keep in the mix, if it ever comes to that.

The current ladder sees us as the top play-in team, and preseason predictions saw us landing 4th in our division, let alone conference, so we may end up exactly where we sit. Balderdash! I hear you say. How is it possible that a team like the Grizz even has to contemplate a play-in. The simple answer is "the West". Who slips out of the top 6? How do the Grizz make up the Loss differential? The only way is head to head against some of the toughest teams in the competition.

Sure our losses have come against the undefeated Lakers and Milwaukee, and against the resurgent 76ers, and a tight one against New York, all without Bradley Beal and Tyler Herro, but Herro only got a run this week due to fortunate timing of his 12th injury game. Both are yet to return to the NBA and only hopes and prayers are seeing these guys return. And sure we reduced our loss differential against the undermanned Timberwolves, but there is still a battle ahead to get us where we want to be at the business end of the season.

With all things in life there is the ying and yang. Where we started off slow with medium term injuries lingering on, we also have the opportunity for some of our young guns to step up. The Rookie of the Week in the West for round 1, Marcus Sasser is the obvious talking point, but Jaden Springer and Ziaire Williams have done well in limited minutes putting up 14 and 8ppg respectively in Week Two. So while the top end of town sits with bad ankles and backs, the juniors step into the spotlight. We've yet to see much of the rookies for the wings, but its just a matter of time for sharpshooters Sheppard and Strawther.

Hopefully the Herro week will finish strong against the Heat and Suns, and give us a chance to stay with the pack.

Till next time. Roar?!?!?!
