NSL Insider - Good D... Just Better O.

by KLEMMELO, updated on Wednesday, March 18 2020, 08:04 pm EST

I know you've been patiently waiting for the break down of the most potent offences in the league at this very moment... They say defence wins championships I know, I know.... But it's the all time Offensive plays that are the stuff that legends are made of. Both Legacies and the history books alike are written and built on a players ability to get it done, achieve the impossible despite all the obstacles, doubts and against all odds. An elite defensive team has to be pin point perfect for almost every minute, every second of those 48 minutes... While all it takes is just one moment, one chance... A slither of daylight, a late contest or defensive miscommunication and the rest is forgotten...

As a bit of a guide and neutral perspective here is the league average in a lot of the stats you will see as we break down the top 5 offences in the league. I felt this was important as it showed both the huge similarities between most of the teams but also contracts the vast differences and quirks that make them each unique and custom made to suit their personnel. It also highlights the splitting of hairs we see when it comes to classifying a good offence from league average or below average and highlights in the end, that is it all just a numbers game teetering on a knifes edge on the smallest of percentages....

LEAGUE AVERAGE:

-PPG: 102.5
-SCP: 7.3

-FBP: 16.7
-FG%: 45

-3FGM: 9.2 (35%)

It's been well documented... The Kings sucked. They made a few moves, talked a but load of trash and somehow happened across something that worked and has since passed it off like some genius stroke. You don't fool us mate. Regardless Lebron at point is straight cheat code and an assortment of capable role players spattered in that  don't get in his way obviously amounts to a top 5 offence. Their best line up they have only just discovered with the obvious addition of Noel which on paper looks to be a defensive
juggernaut (They are) but are also not to shabby on the offensive end. In a small sample size this unit eclipses most and even rivals the Blazers god five who they traded away... Nyaaaw.

Right in the mix in most categories they present a real balanced offence being able to efficiently score from inside/outside and from the line where they're 2nd in the league behind the Lakers on makes. They take care of the Ball and lead the league in pace but the downfalls of their offence is a somewhat lack of bench scoring (perhaps re-mediated recently with the addition of Bog and return of Waiters) and their ability to crash the offensive boards for second chance opportunities. The Kings have been trending up the second half of the season and could see their name higher up where it matters soon.

The Hawks have been flying under the radar somehow all year... well if you've just been coming out of quarantine for the past 2 months plus perhaps... They're the hipster pick to make some noise this year, the working class mans team who just wants to get the job done with zero flare and no mucking about. They stole Rose off of a desperate Kings franchise early and spring boarded their ceiling instantaneously. Melo was got for sweet FA and the rest is history... They smash the offensive boards, get to the line and grind teams out being able to apply pressure for 48 mins with one of the best benches in the league periodically seeing the likes of Melo, Ross, Bev and Nunn bolster their ranks.

They can be a little TO heavy and lack scoring in the paint at times with only Embiid being the main player inside the paint. Scoring on the break isn't their thing ether so sometimes the offence is a bit predictable and easy to game plan against. That being said though they just got LMA and he plays perfectly into their slow it down, pick em apart style of game and could be the missing key to unlock their offence to the next level or at least provide them a whole lot of options available to them come play off time.

3. LA Lakers

-6th Seed in the West (39-28)
-Longest W streak: 4

-23.4 FTM
-101.3 Pace

For a fleeting moment the Lakers were GM'less... Floating about in the abyss, a ghost ship if you like, sinking beneath the waves weighed down by the brick houses Brodie built... And then the league did away with that WoWing pest (I love you Greeny.... A love much Like that uncle at awkward family shindigs; Who used to crush my hand when i went to shake his and cackle at my tears.... Who gave me my first sip of beer when i was 8....) and made way for the new age! "How would you improve this team?" We asked judging...ly ... "Well I'd trade everyone but Westbrook..." and the rest was history! The Lakers have been playing old school positional ball all year and have had mixed results. Westbrook has always got his numbers... Of course, and they have kept their head just above water with an elite offence. They lead the league in FTM by a huge margin, are second in pace behind the Kings, among the league leaders in PIP, Offensive rebounds and second chance opportunities and take care of the ball better then anyone.

Their bench however is WoW-ful (he he he...) and it's their lack of depth that really hurts them and is the glaring weakness down the stretch as his stars tend to fatigue in the closing minutes far to often. They don't score in volume from three and are in the bottom third of the league in fast break points which is surprising given they have WB and are up their in pace. Their defence is also near league worst which although doesn't contribute to the offence in the box score can still be argued that their big names are just doing way to much on both ends.

2. Chicago Bulls

-1st Seed in the East (51-15)
-Longest W streak: 21
-Highest scoring game: 151 (OT)

-Highest winning margin: 128-83 vs Hou (Away)

-OFFREB: 9.0 (2nd)

Best Offensive line up (Minimum 4 games):

-118.3 Oeff
-0.581 EFG%
-11.8 TO
-15.1 FTM
-100.1 Pace

The beast out East. The Bulls are home and hose it seems to take out top spot in the Eastern conference and was solidified further as soon as Ben Simmons went down with back issues (Perhaps a solid off season of hard fought, gritty national basketball would've prepared you for the rigors of the NBA season... Not broken promises, virtue signalling and paid appearances hmmmmm?). They like to slow it down, get to the line for easy points, move the ball (1st in assists) and smash the paint (2nd in rebounds and PIP). Their best offensive line up is pretty much who they run with at the moment and they're best with AD at the four.

Their only downfall is the volume of points scored at the line, lackluster perimeter Offence and at times their TO prone style of ball zipping around the court with so many ball handlers on the hardwood together.... Their elite Defense and ability to get good fundamental scoring looks so easily is why most nights that doesn't even matter....

And the best?

YOU READY?!

WOOOOOAHHH NO WAAAAAYYY.... HAHAHAHAHAH NAH Nah I can't do it with a straight face. Classic stitch up by the Klemm. Ahhhh nah just a joke everyone we have fun, we have fun here. No on to last of the teams that matter.
