News - Utah Jazz - Jasonpitts
When will we be relevant?
As a new GM in the league, and knowing the league has only been around for a couple of years, I find it super interesting to see how it has been shaped in a very short amount of time. It got me wondering, how can some teams be so bad, so quickly? Including the Jazz of course...
Some teams just got it right. They drafted well, they work the phones, and they put in the effort to consistently see results as great GMs of the league. Just look at the Blazers, Spurs, Hornets, Pistons etc etc. It seems like these guys will be at the top for a long time coming. The middle ranks see the Raptors, Wizards, Pelicans, Memphis and even the Wolves (amazing work) doing plenty to make some noise underneath the top tiers.
So how do some teams get it oh so wrong in such a short time? I am genuinely curious as I inherited a team with Lowry, Love and Bogdanovic as my big 3 - a team that would barely make the play-in at full strength. It was always going to be a reset, and I guess there is the appeal for me as I did not draft my team that I could now build it from the ground up. Maybe some guys just missed the mark on the initial draft? Maybe some just love purgatory. Praise baby Jesus.
The other interesting topic since the league is so young, when do the big dogs decide to blow it all up? Do they keep competing and fighting for those wins because it is what they have learnt to love? Or do they accept the 4,5 year turnaround project to try something new?
I personally do not know what it feels like to win at the moment, but trading pieces to make my team better always ignites a fire in the belly. It may seem cheap, but Utah cannot wait to get some wins on the board in the coming years, however, we don't want to fast forward too much, as this growing stage is kinda fun..
I also missed the opportunity for a sign up this week (damn some guys are quick), hence the reason for 3 news articles once again, so thanks for your patience and go Jazz.
