News - Memphis Grizzlies - Rootsey
Free Agency wins
Leading up to the Free Agency bonanza the Grizzlies front office was expecting to not take part at all, so Rootsey put his hand up for the broadcast. The plan was to try create a roster spot prior to free agency, so they could sign their 2nd round rookie, Greg Brown III.

The idea had been to try do a 2 for 1 deal to get a better back-up big, as the others are not quite ready for the bright lights of the NSL. The trouble was that most big men in the NSL seemed to be off contract, and a deal could not be found. This also put the GM point war chest in a position where it wasn't going to be used to add a player. So while hosting, the lines were open for quick discussions to try find a deal and look at other ways to spend points.
Fortunately other GMs were in a position where points were required, and the trading of 2nds for cash considerations was completed 3 times (Boston '24, Detroit '25, and Washington '26) through the free agency show.
The only thing that didn't go to plan was the Enes Kanter showing on the Free Agency board. A fan favorite from his previous stint (only 12 games, but he made his mark). At this stage the team had 62 GMs left to spend. With some consideration of earlier bids for similar players and a rush of blood, Rootsey went all in. As the time was expiring on the bid, the team re-calculated the risk/reward and went to reduce the bid to around 40, but by the time the page had loaded up, the timer had expired. Fortunately the bid won, and the team brought the big man back to join Derrick White, who was in the deal that saw Kanter leave the team two years ago.
But this left the team with one player too many and still needing to sign Greg Brown. This saw the waiver of KZ Okpala from the team, unfortunately KZ who had yet to play a game and had only joined the squad recently in a trade for Darius Bazely. KZ was selected as he was expiring and had been on the trade block since he arrived without many bites. If KZ clears waivers the contract will only sit against the cap for a single season.
The team was still in a pickle now that Free Agency had ended and too many players and not enough roster spots. GM Rootsey started hustling as soon as the period was over, looking to move one of the teams younger bigs for yet another 2nd. Just over 24 hours later and within minutes of each other, two offers were made for Chimeze Metu. As the Portland offer had just hit the inbox moments before the other offer, the deal was accepted. Bringing in a 4th 2nd rounder from the free agency period.

The only domino yet to fall is the running of the waiver wire to see if the team has to wear the caphold for Okpala for the season, or does some lucky team pick up a 22 year old wing.
The team now holds 15 2nd rounders over the next 5 years, and looks forward to using them on players with sweet-sweet potential.
