I Thought You Left!
The trade NSL deadline came and went. The deadline came and went without a move. The trade dealing came and went without ANY moves by the Dallas Mavericks and their forgettable general manager, L J Maverick. Don't get me wrong. The team tried. Yes, they tried to unload expiring contracts to no avail. There was deals on the table. Talks. Many talks with other general managers. But, nothing came to fruition. Now, the team must march with what squad they have and egos they may have bruised along the way.
Another week has the team decimated by injuries. Most notable, Fred VanVleet and Chuma Okeke are nursing ailments that are keeping them out for the week at minimum. Dennis Schroder, as of today, is on the NSL Covid-19 protocol, so it should not result in him missing any games next week. Schroder, one of the names thrown around at the deadline, has been most productive since being inserted to the starting five, a move for which Rick Carlisle has been applauded.
The team was hit by the largest luxury tax fine for the team in its short NSL life. The fine will surely cripple any ideas of being a player in the free agency summer of 2021, but L J Maverick does have a few tricks up his sleeve with agreements in place with some teams that will alleviate some of that luxury stress. The team is expected to re-sign at least one of its big names this summer and hope for the best on the rest. But, as we all know, things can and will change from now until then. We'll just have to stay patient and see.
All-world star Kevin Durant has been on a tear as of late putting up MVP-like numbers on decent efficiency. He was been working hard since his most recent injury and looks poised to help the team on a crucial stretch for playoff seeding and a long playoff run.
