The Road Ahead

Well, that escalated quickly.  The road to a playoff berth has taken the Dallas Mavericks for a rough and rocky ride.  In actuality, it has exposed the team as a possible fraud.

Now, all this nonsense can be made from the argument that one of their start players, Kevin Durant, was out all week,  Undoubtedly, teams came in with more of a sense of being predators over prey seeing the team get decimated in the ratings change (as ost teams were) and coupled with Durant's absence.  The nightmarish week has come to a close (we hope) for the Mavericks and their loyal fanbase.  What started with a first week and a yawning 3-1 record ended in a 1-3 record in the second week, making the Mavericks an also-ran and a meager .500 squad.

The reality that surrounds the Maverick is they are top-heavy in salary with little-to-no depth off the bench.  They struggle with matchups once their starters are on the bench with only Dennis Schroder, who is on the trade block, making any impact.  The rookie and mild phenon Chuma Okeke has yet to make his NSL debut, leaving the Mavericks hopeful with a lot to be desired.
Head Coach Rick Carlisle has gone on record that when Durant does come back, he will once again tinker with the lineup.  The lack of production from anyone playing minutes at the small forward position is alarming to say the least.  The shots are there.  They are just not being taken.  Open looks is not the problem.  It's communication.

The weeks that come for the Mavericks will be true tests for the squad if they remain healthy.  When healthy, they are a team to be reckoned with, but short-handed, even just once key cog missing, will certainly spell doom for a season in which they are already looking forward to be fined heavily by the league for salary cap issues.  If this season is "do or die", and they team has that mentality, they better come up with answers soon.  This is not the season to be playing coy with cap fines if it just means putting a mediocre product for all to see.  The fans of Dallas deserve more.
