San Antonio Sobered

Week 1

The Spurs have stumbled out of the blocks showing signs of a championship hangover in week 1. To be fair to the defending champs, the schedule to start the title defence was incredibly challenging, a 5 game week which turned into 6 (we dont want to talk about that) featuring tough opponents such as the Pels, Suns, Lakers, Jazz and Knicks. To add to the pain most of the games were on the road.

High expectations were in place leading up. The ring ceremony against the Knicks went to plan with the Spurs holding on in a nail biter. The Suns put up a gallant fight but proved a little light on defensively as their game plan wasnt fully executed through 4 quarters. The new-look pelicans were still working out their identity, though Luka nearly single-handedly caused an upset with a 40 point performance.

The Jazz were a shock for the spurs fans. Expecting to run over the top of the new-look contending Jazz, the spurs were bullied down the stretch, proving too 1 dimensional to keep up with their hungry opponents. The first loss of the season was dished up and the cracks started to appear in the armour of San Antonio.

The Lakers loss came after a dreaded re-sim which has happened to a number of GMs over the course of the NSL. The Spurs had won the initial matchup on the road against the formidable Lakers, however due to an advantageous lineup still set from the preseason, the Lakers they were awarded a second chance to take down the Spurs. In another close encounter, LA proved too strong offensively, behind their star gunner- Kevin Durant and his unstoppable jump shot. Spurs fell to 3-2 in a week that sobered the Spurs.

San Antonio will now look within over the coming weeks. There's no doubt the top-end talent is there and the depth is as good as it has ever been, the feeling in the front office is there needs to be a better balance. Justin Holiday will be inserted into the starting lineup, while the bench will run deep with Covington Vucevic and Spencer Dinwiddie. Fingers crossed the results follow the changes and a better balance is found in week 2! Giannis and Harden will once again be leant upon to carry the offensive load in the starting unit while the bench will attempt to outrun and gun their (hopefully) lower rated opponents.

Rome was not built in a day.

Go spurs
