Houston Trades for Future Capspace
A lot has been happening in Houston lately. This is kind of odd because
Im normally not active in trades. Last year teams were just throwing good
players in my lap and I had no choice but to say yes. This year is a little
different in the sense that Im the one throwing good players in other teams
laps in a quest to cut future salary.
Why? Because Tyrese Maxey and Tyrese Haliburton are getting serious pay
raises next year. But also because I had too many shooting guards.
So it came down to this:
- I wanted to unload 2 shooting guards
- I wanted to cut future salary
- Each trade I was hoping for expiring salary + [prospect or pick]
The Trades
1st Trade: Norman
Powell for Marcus Morris (salary) + BJ Boston (prospect)
Norman Powells contract has been great for me over the past 2 years.
He has done nothing but exceeded expectations. He still has 3 years left on his
contract and I wont have room for it.
Once this year is over, Marcus Morris salary will end, and will allow
me to clear $17 million cap space. And as long as he can stay healthy, he can
start for my team next to Jokic.
BJ Boston is a prospect that I have always wanted. Nenjabin sniped him
one pick ahead of me in the 2nd round of the 2021 NSL Draft. Ive
been waiting all these years for Ben to finish playing with him. Bostons game
is a lot like Brandon Ingram, except he doesnt have the insane 73 wingspan
like Ingram has. He fell immensely in the 2021 draft due to lack of rim
pressure. But guys like me and Ben knew that this was because he lacked
strength which is something hell gain with time.

Its interesting to note that just like this year with Chris
Livingston, Rich Paul specifically asked teams not to draft BJ with hopes that
he could sign a 2WAY with a team of his choosing. He could of ended up with the
Lakers and gotten minutes like Austin Reaves has. However, the LA Clippers didnt
listen and still drafted him anyways. I believe he is a NBA player, but hes
buried within the Clippers depth chart, and hes not getting minutes unless
someone gets hurt. I figure Morey wants to trade for him but Balmer is refusing
to include BJ in a trade and instead trying to force Terance Mann on him in the
Harden talks.
2nd Trade: Jordan
Clarkson for TJ McConnell (salary) + Christian Koloko (prospect)
I would have liked to have sent Jordan Clarkson to Philadelphia, but we
were still waiting on his decision to take his player option. So I never even
mentioned it to Ben. Teams have asked about Clarkson in the past, but Ive
always wanted to keep him because I thought he was the next in line to become
the next Lou Williams (essentially a perennial 6MOY). However, as the year went
by, I realized I dont know how to make gunner types work. I prefer an
efficiency guard like Luke Kennard or Norman Powell.
As we got closer to Jordan Clarksons player option date, I began
browsing the trade block and I saw that Milwaukee had the best combination of
assets to make a trade happen. Again, I was looking for salary + a prospect or
pick.
TJ McConnell isnt exactly an expiring contract, but I did the trade
anyways because I needed a floor general for my bench unit. I had Devonte
Graham, but he is more of a combo guard than a floor general. If it came down
to it, I could renounce McConnell next summer and clear $4.7 million cap space,
but $5 million is still guaranteed and will remain as dead salary.
Christian Koloko is a raw prospect center that got a ton of play time
last year for the NBA Toronto Raptors. He is kind of cheesy in 2k, but still
commits a lot of fouls. The worst case scenario is I keep him as a glitch center
coming off my bench. The best case scenario is I can flip him for a future 1st.
The NBA Utah Jazz announced Jordan Clarksons player extension a little
after I traded him. This would give Daz 3 years to use him. It looks pretty bad
for me, but even if I hadnt made the move, I wouldnt have felt so good about
holding him on the books. Maybe I could have gotten better value if I had just
held. But who knows. It just feels bad because I lost an 82 rated player.
Post Trade Depth Chart
After these trades, this is how my depth chart is looking.

Im happy with my current rotation. The only thing I have for trade right now is Devonte Graham. He has a partial guarantee for next year. I either want to combine him with one of my bench players to clear a roster spot, or trade him for an expiring salary that I can actually trust with minutes. But even if I keep him, only $2.8 million of his salary next year is guaranteed.
Christian Koloko isn't really a prospect that I have been chasing. I just got him with hopes of flipping him for a 1st. So that is another move I could make if someone wants to pay for the guy.
