How to be an NSL GM: Guide for Dummies

Being a GM is very complicated as each person builds their team, we all cross each other’s path in some way, but nobody will truly know the ins and outs of someone else’s team. The beauty behind the league is that nobody sees everything the exact same way as someone else. After each and every trade happens critiquing comes through Discord, sometimes causing tsunami type waves, and others like a small rock landing in the ocean. In this article, I will about topics that are key in being a great NSL GM. There are many different things to take into account, and there is not always a right or wrong decision

Value or Fit in Trades

I think this topic on should I trade for value or fit depends on where your team is at. If you are rebuilding, I would recommend 99% of the time to go based on value. Long-term getting the most value will increase the assets you have which should lead to a better team. The hard part to this method is having to sacrifice some won games. When I joined the league basically all of my trades were value based, I came in with the team at a play-in level. As the team had more success, my style and thought process changed. As we won more games, it showed how much fit matters. Once you have enough talent to be in the running to try and win it all, you start looking at the best way to utilize those talents.

Pulse on the League

Just as I imagine it would be in the NBA as a GM having knowledge of every situation around the league is a must. We will lots of times see trades happen and people will be mad they didn’t know a guy was available, or they didn’t know a guy was going for as cheap as he did. Knowing what is going on with each team is a skill you have to master, I was able to trade for Scottie Barnes through knowing a possible trade happening and being the 3rd team in the deal. Too many people complain about JMac getting a guy they had no idea was available, but I always got to give him props, he is persistent and keeps his finger on the pulse. He usually does know about trades being discussed, before they even happen and tries to be that other needed team to be able to make all sides happy.

Community

Knowing the community impacts everything, with people that I know more it tends to make doing trades easier. Every GM has their own style, some traders pair very well together, while others will never make a trade with each other just due to their personalities. Knowing what is going on in the community also gives you a better look at what will happen in FA before it actually happens. The community is what makes this league so unique and many describe it as the best community to be apart of.

Free Agency

Free agency is the most complex thing to get a handle on in our league. You have to first off navigate around whatever limits are put on your team, whether it be the luxury tax, 1st apron, or 2nd apron. Then you have to figure out who could fit into cap space or exceptions, as well as try to fill the needs on your roster while competing against other teams to do so. The algorithm is unlike anything else, until you get to free agency day, there is no way to tell how yours will be. You will have to try and guess what other teams will do, and even then you can max out a bid on someone and still lose just cause of the random factor.

Draft

The draft is another big event in our league, but considering there isn’t as much variance as free agency, it is pretty tame. You know where you’ll be drafting at and there’s only 60 guys being selected that day. Once it gets to your pick you’ll have no competition to get your guy. I have found drafting best player available/best opportunity in the NBA works best for the draft since usually the players aren’t ready to carry a team right away. The top few picks are the only ones that can possibly do this, unless you are a rebuilding team you don’t want to have unproven youth be your best players.

Rotations

Going right into rotations and coaching from that, it’s about playing guys you know will produce. You may have to play a guy from time to time that is a rookie, but you only want it to be sparingly. The playbooks are complicated and difficult to understand how much they truly matter, I usually use the teams playbooks IRL that fits the mold of my team most. Having players with multiple position eligibility is very valuable as that means that player can be on the court more.
