NSL Insider - Draft Report Card: ...by gc6, updated on Thursday, August 26 2021, 04:07 am EST Draft Report Card: Who is your daddy and what does he do? Well everyone's favorite time of the year has been run and done, Despite Laddas doing his best effort to ruin the draft before it had even started by not having all the microphones connected. After we got rolling though it turned out to be a pretty fun couple of hours and some great work behind the scenes on the new draft pages by our very own pistol Pete was a great surprise and made it even more special. Also amazing work on discord by Laddas putting the picks in and all our draft hosts doing the talking! was refreshing having a whole range of opinions, even though im pretty sure everyone said all 60 picks were great, so looks like we are in for the best draft class ever. PS. i wish i could have Toby read me bed time stories, i could drift off to sleep in 30 seconds with the sound of that voice whispering me sweet nothings. PPs. Good to see all the people we dont hear from during the year come out of hibernation. It was a beautiful moment, albeit a brief one. Looking forward to seeing you all again at free agency. Now thats out of the way its time to turn to the Gav's expert Draft Grades for all the lotto picks. Could grade all 60 picks but whats the point. The chance of landing a big time difference make outside the lotto is slim, so i couldn't give grades without it being pure guess work. I do like a few players in the later in the piece though so there might be a special mention section, also maybe not. Without further adue, here are my findings and usually correct opinion on the recent draftees. Feel free to flame away in the comments if you hate it. Pick 1 - Cade Cunningham - Los Angeles Lakers Draft Pick Grade A+ Didnt overthink it and took the best player in the draft, hot takes from summer league be damned. Some of the experts (me included) think he is one of the top prospects this decade next to Anthony Davis and Zion Williamson. After the train wreck of the last couple of GM's the lakers have had, its great to see the franchise back on the right path. Pick 2 - Jalen Green - Atlanta Hawks Draft Pick Grade A+ Not a bad consolation prize at all landing Jalen Green number 2. Plenty of arguments to be had after he balled out in summer league, and those same arguments will continue for the next few years until we see either him or Cade in an all star game. Looks primed to lead the league in scoring at least once in his career and he certainly has the confidence to back it up, or is it arrogance?. Will have an obscene usage rate from the get go and will most certainly be rated in the 80's in no time. Owning Green is going to be a wild and fun ride. Pick 3 Evan Mobley - Milwaukee Bucks Draft Pick Grade A+ Yea im being generous here with the grades, but its my article. Also anyone that landed one of the top 4 players in a top 4 draft gets an A plus. Mobley looks to be a great defensive centre right off the bat and if his offence comes around as well then he is definitely going to be a star big man. Also the perfect fit on the bucks who dont really have a big man worth writing about at all. Pick 4 Jalen Suggs - Orlando Magic Draft Pick Grade N/A Can't give myself a grade here without looking like a knob, but one of the least surprising picks of the draft goes to me. Everyone who i talked to the moment the ping pong balls fell my way knew this was the pick, and it was great to finally make it after an anxious wait for the draft after a long season of losing. I really believe suggs is going to be a star and he will have the keys the moment the first ball is bounced next season in Orlando in both the NBA and NSL Pick 5 Scottie Barnes - Minnesota Timberwolves Pick Grade B+ Scottie 2 Hottie is a great prospect dont get me wrong, has amazing measurables, energy and great defense, but thats about it. He has landed at the perfect place to get the most out of himself though as i dont think theres any argument the Toronto Raptors are the best development team in the NBA. Will also probably be up there in the ROTY talks as well, just because he seems to have the build that 2k loves. Also if you loved Kuminga the whole year, just take him or you might regret it. Pick 6 Jonathon Kuminga - Boston Celtics Pick Grade A Maybe biased here cause i really like Kuminga, and he looked even better than expected during Summer League. Was like a man amongst boys some times and definitely passed the eye test after he slid down the draft a bit for being "too raw". Toby basically moved up 1 spot for free to get this pick too which is smart trading as i believe the drop off after the top 6 is significant. He will have to wait a while for Kuminga to develop though is the only downside. Pick 7 Josh Giddey - Utah Jazz Pick Grade B Look i love Jase, but i dont love this pick for him. I think Giddy might have been over drafted a bit in the NBA and now the NSL as well. Sure he had a great season in Australia and he is an Aussie as well which is going to be fun, but he has high bust potential for mine as well. Landed in a good spot for him to develop next to SGA in OKC though, so maybe ill be proven wrong, but he just feels too slow and too white at the moment for the hot pace of the NBA., Pick 8 Davion Mitchell - Cleveland Cavs Pick Grade B+ If you asked me before summer league what i thought of this pick it, i would have given it a D-. But seeing the suffocating defense that Mitchell displayed during those few games turned me into a fan. Cant grade this any higher than that though, because the NSL hates anyone over the age of 23 and hes almost there. Pick 9 Alperun Sengun - Boston Celtics Pick Grade A Stroke of genius again from the Celtics GM, trading in front of the hawks to nab one of the drafts best big men. Was a faller on draft day in the NBA but big strong Toby wasn't going to make the same mistake here. Looked great in Summer league and will be able to fill his boots with all the opportunity he is going to get in both leagues. If i had stayed at pick 9 this is who i was going to take as well ( but i would have given myself an A+) Pick 10 James Bouknight - Atlanta Hawks Pick Grade B+ Really hard to give bad grades at the top of this draft because i like a lot of players that have been picked so far haha. Bouknight projects to be a walking bucket and has also landed in a great situation for him in the NBA. Has great physical tools and height for a shooting guard and could wind up being one of the best players in the draft without it being a surprise at all. Pick 11 Moses Moody - Boston Celtics Draft Pick Grade B+ No wonder everyone was giving the Celtics a pat on the back during draft day, they got an absolute haul. Moody could step into a role right away in the NBA as well as the NSL. A smooth shooter that will play some defence and rebound, looks like a perfect development player for the Celtics to hang on to and see what comes out after a few seasons. Pick 12 Jalen Johnson - Denver Nuggets Draft Pick Grade C As you can tell, not a fan, and it may be a bit controversial. Just dont have any time for a player that has the talent but has quit on every team he has been on. Sure he is athletic and has great measurables and can ball no doubt, but when the going gets tough after an 82 game schedule, can you 100% count on to not lose his mind yet again? probably not. Would have gotten a higher grade if he was taken in the 20's and not in the lotto. Pick 13 Corey Kispert - Los Angeles Clippers Draft Pick Grade C Another pick im not overly excited about with so much talent still available. Sure if Kispert was 19 instead of 22 id be open to giving him a much better grade. But i just dont see the upside besides another duncan robinson, who is available in free agency for free. Yep the guy is smart and he is one of the best shooters in the draft, but other then that i just dont get it. Pick 14 Ziare Williams - Golden State Warriors Draft Pick Grade C+ Boom or Bust pick for Titles here, but worth a shot at pick 14. Was absolutely horrific trying to put the ball in the hole during his one season of college which is a big thumbs down. But the rest of him sounds like a great project player on paper and hes still young af. Has a long way to go though and we wont know how he pans out for a few years. If he was taken any higher than this though then the draft score wouldn't be as kind. |
